He smiled at her. A sad, but supportive smile that did its best to communicate what he was feeling in the moment. There was a twang in his heart for her, the way she refused to trust him, not because she didn’t want to, but because she’d been let down by those she’d trusted before. Nikolai made a promise to himself right there in that sunlit solarium that he would never be the one to let her down. He would be the one to change her perspective of the world. He would make her know that it was okay to be comfortable with him, to be her broken self, but also to be her healing self. She could be broken and jagged and he wouldn’t mind. Everyone was a little broken after all.
“But I want to,” he said to her. His hands were still on her scars, and it amazed him to see how someone could be so hurt, so mistrusting. “You have a point, but everyone has the potential to be made different.” Nikolai admired her, bronze skin and silky dark hair shining in the sun, and it was the sunlight that she said pointed out flaws that illuminated her beauty the most. He would remember this moment forever, he thought. It was like a painting, encapsulated forever in his mind, with all of the beautiful flaws that it had. Perfection was something the fae thought they had reached. But they had never had this. This was only for Nikolai and Talia. This moment belonged to them.
He had expected her to say yes to coming, it was a side effect of being the golden prince. Everyone always said yes to him. But apart from that, he really did expect her to say yes. Nikolai’s hands dropped from her arms to clasp her hands. He was positively beaming with happiness. “Really?” he asked, surprised. “I promise Talia, you won’t regret it. I won’t let you down.” He was already planning everything he could do to make it the best experience for her. “You said I was the painting and you were the painter. But everyone can change. I will become the painter, and I will make you the painting. That way, others will be able to admire you just as much as I do.”
