welcome to Midsummer
Welcome to the wilds of Faerie, where deception and intrigue wind through the courts of the fae. Revels overflow with excess, beauty, and betrayal, while the students of the Iris Academy learn to take their place in a world where nothing is ever as it seems. Now, as a blue moon rises, the reigning High Court prepares to make peace with the Undersea, but peace is not something that rises easily from the ashes. Beware wandering into a faerie circle, mortals, and never strike a bargain with the fae; they may not be able to lie, but they are always hiding something.
Midsummer is a character-driven, fae folklore, text-based RPG site, founded 3 September 2023 by admins SeaJem + M. We are a collective of writers from a variety of backgrounds and histories, and we value community, character development, and sharing a love of writing. Feel free to look around and explore—but don’t go too far, or it may be hard to leave.

Site Lore
The Faewild is comprised of four Cardinal Courts, plus the ruling High Court and the Undersea. The Seelie Courts, North and South, are slightly more traditional and straightforward (as much as the fae ever are), which their Unseelie counterparts to the East and West are duplicitous and wild.
Farthest south, beneath the waves, lies the Undersea, home to the pearl-encrusted Sunken City. The Undersea fae are a proud people—perhaps too much so, according to some of their counterparts on dry land. All of the Faewild is ruled by the High Court, whose power is personified in the High King and Queen. By wearing this crown, they take on the spirit of the Faewild; their hearts beat with the heart of the land. Beware, and choose your words carefully: the fae are a capricious and tricky people, as fickle as they are cunning, and their rulers are the most of all.

[attr="class","box1"]Jay found himself trembling on the beach, unsure of how he'd gotten there. He had his arms folded over his knees, and his mind was splintering, splintering, slivers of glass, or the sand it was made from, spilling through his hands, spilling through the hourglass, covering the shore he was sitting on, ruining the nice clothes he'd worn for the revel. The stars were out. He remembered a few things. He remembered when the cries began. He remembered that knight, torchlight making his armor look like it was still in the forge, moldable, scorching. He remembered the rush of the crowd, and then the press of bodies, and then the memories were from much further back—the bubble vanishing from his mother's lips, the slow-motion avalanche of the classroom ceiling, her empty gray eyes, the stretch of land appearing just as he was about to let the tide have him. There was nothing but cool air on his skin, he reminded himself, over and over. But the ghosts of the crowd wouldn't leave him. He flexed his hands and forced himself to his feet. Luckily he hadn't let anyone close enough to care, otherwise they might come looking for him. The shimmer around his eyes was probably ruined now. They'd see what he had decayed into. Further down the shore, his gaze snagged on a lone figure—a woman, Undersea by her looks, dark-haired. If she was here, Jay reasoned with himself, she likely wanted to be alone just as he did. And he did want to be alone. But there was a kindness in him that had never been quenched, a conscience that would be even more restless than usual if he left her here. So he began to cross the sand, walking towards her. [attr="class","ptpost"]It was supposed to be a celebration. A sign of peace between two lands and a place of safety. Her father had invited her in hopes of showing her the beautiful world of the land fae. Though he didn't say it, he'd hoped she'd find some peace from the hauntings of her past. By getting to know those of the land, she might have learned not to fear them so. That had been the hope, but that wish had been cruelly shattered under the fragile light of the blue moon.[break][break]
Her enthrallment with the beauty of that night had been sliced clean through by the first screams. She'd frozen and as the crowd started to surge, she returned to the collapsing walls of her old home as the sirens of war blared. Her love of the beautiful world was no shield to the ghosts that haunted her. Before she knew it, her body had rushed towards the sea. With reckless abandon, she'd leapt into the waves. Her dress tore on the stones and her shoes found a home on the waves as she swam into a sea bleeding red.[break][break] Pushed and pulled by the waves, Asuka found herself tossed onto the shore. With wet sand beneath her feet, her mind weary with fatigue and shock returned to the present. She sat with her knees pulled to her chest and her eyes on the waves. As she dried, scales shimmering in emerald greens and blues dried to fair skin. The sea that greeted her quiet mind glistened a deep blue without a trace of scarlet. In her panic, she'd conjured up a blood red sea. War had not returned to their waters, but it felt all too similar to the undersea fae. "I can't stay here," she whispered to herself. Foolishly, she'd tried to trust again, but clearly, she shouldn't have. Once things had quieted down, she'd find her father, bid him farewell, and let him know she was going home. She should have known better than to come here. [attr="class","box1"]Jazspar knew his own susceptibility to currents. If he strayed too close to the sea, he might never resurface. Every shift in the tide could, if he thought about it a moment too long, be the brush of something in the water. So why did he cross the sand, closer to the line where it darkened with damp, to the surging and receding line of foam? Because he had never clung to his sanity any more strongly than he had clung to his life, he reasoned. If his own safety was to be a matter of little importance to him, well, he might as well make that fact benefit someone else. If he was broken into the shape of self-sacrifice, who was he to deny his bent towards kindness? It was a shame that she had to see him in this ruined state—sand-stained, his fine glitter and glamour smudged and half-scrubbed away. He liked to think that if he looked put-together enough, he could fool himself into thinking that he was something more whole than the splinters, sand grains, of the boy he had been. Still, at least it was a private sort of ruination, alone on this beach with only another proverbially shipwrecked survivor to know. Perhaps castaways could be permitted their ragged edges. It was just that Jay didn't want to bear the signs of the storm he'd braved. He stood some feet away from her, now, more comfortable with the distance, even if it was in excess. "Are you all right?" he asked, only loud enough for her to hear over the muffled, whispered voice of the waves. He wondered if he listened long enough, if he'd understand their words. [attr="class","ptpost"]If there was one thing she was familiar with, it was betrayal. Trust was fragile and had long flown the confines of her heart. This event had proved without a doubt that she couldn't afford to open her heart. As if she was sighing with her whole body, she stretched one leg out to touch the lapping waves. She'd return to what she knew and where she was safest in the familiar embrace of the sea.[break][break]
Asuka titled her head back, eyes closed, and breathed in a silence broken only by the murmurs of the waves. Just breathe. Words whispered to comfort her racing heart that had become her solace in difficult times. He'd been her safety net, but he wasn't here now. As she listened, an unwelcome sound broke her reverie. The soft crush of soles on sand. Instantly, her eyes flew open. What was coming? Was a threat? She stiffened with one hand braced against the sand ready to run.[break][break]
What greeted her eyes was a sight she never thought she'd see again. The tension left her body, but a new doubt bloomed in its place. If this was who she thought it was, would he even remember her? Grown though he was, she would never forget his features. But from the way he spoke, he seemed he didn't remember her. Her hand came to her face, brushing her hair aside absently, "I'm fine. Thank you." Asuka answered with a distance in her voice. Jay wouldn't remember her. [attr="class","box1"]Jay wanted to be alone, he reminded himself again, but the lonely part of his heart had teeth. It would start on him if it hungered long enough. He wondered how long a heart could starve, and if his own slow death had already begun. He envied the ease with which she reached out a smooth limb towards the waves. It must have been wonderful to have salt free of the sting of memories, blurring his eyes, pricking at wounds. There was something familiar in the gesture that she made, the tambre of her voice. It caught him up like a current. Usually tides like this dragged him down into the trench of his memories, to what lurked in the dark, but this was different—dawn on the horizon, the water's glittering surface. For once the ocean seemed kind. "I know you," Jay said uncertainly, his voice sounding unlike one he knew as his own. It was a tentative boy's voice, a lost child reaching blindly for something familiar. He looked away. She wasn't looking at him, and the water was shifting and receding too much to show a reflection, but if she glanced back she'd see his disarray, the way he had come undone. He would look as broken as he felt. That he could not bear. [attr="class","ptpost"]Despite having grown in a time tempered by war, Asuka still retained an incautious nature. She didn't notice others until they were at her back or right before her. What she lacked in athletics, she made up for in mental strength but knowing every flora in the sea would not her save life if someone chose to take it. So she didn't notice when the other fae approached. Not the muffled sound of their footsteps or their growing shadow. With her thoughts lost in her own world, she noticed none of it. It was only when they spoke that their presence reached her.[break][break]
She turned towards the noise with a start, one hand reaching for the waves. If needed, she would call the ocean's power if only enough for her to make a getaway. But she took in the formal attire as her eyes moved from the person's feet to their disarrayed face. What she saw reflected brought back memories of a time she'd long written off. "Jay?" she all but whispered. She turned her entire body to face him. Even in her wildest dreams, she had never thought she'd see him again. That boy was gone as were all the memories he'd brought with him.[break][break]
"Is it really you?" she questioned as the stars winked in and out above them. "Why are you here?" What had happened in the short years they had been apart? Though he had grown, she could still tell he was the same fae as back then, at least on the outside. So much had changed. She doubted he was still the same on the inside. [attr="class","box1"]Jazspar feared that he had surprised her. It wouldn't be the only surprise he had to offer her, he reflected grimly; if he knew this fae, he knew her from long ago, from a time before he was the shell he'd become. Empty and discarded on the sand. Colorful and shimmering but lifeless. Helpless when the tide surged too high and dragged out to drift when it receded. "I apologize for my suddenness," he said softly, looking away. His shell was cracked now, his formal clothing stained and askew, she shimmer smudged on his face. He despised little more than looking as broken as he was. At least she would know from the beginning what had become of him. It was just that if she knew, he might have to never see her again. "I did not mean to startle you."His name, spoken, hit the air with all the mourning of a whale song. Jay swallowed the feeling of drowning that rose in his throat. She was facing him now, on the sand, at the edge of the tide, the seam between sea and land that tore and re-stitched with every surge of the foam-edged waves. He was drowning in air. Memory sat heavy on his chest. "Asuka." It escaped him in a whisper. "It's me," he said. The fae could not lie, and the words didn't feel like they should be able to pass his lips, but there they were, out in the air. He looked out to the horizon, where the stars bled by reflection into the dark water. "I have family on the land. I stayed with them and now I teach at Iris." Again he swallowed, seeking air. "I've wondered for years if you survived." Had they? Had he? Sometimes he felt as if the boy he was had drowned, despite his mother's sacrifice. He kept the world at a distance now, like a ghost that could not touch, only pass through.
