Jin-hwa sat in a room full of people. A room full of rulers. A room full of those who could make or break her with a single word. In faerie, words were power. She couldn't forget it. [break][break]

They expected her to be at a disadvantage. Since she didn't know the land. Since she had been here a week and the High King was dead. Since she got his blood on her clothes. [break][break]

The boy, the poisoner's prince, was here too. Across from her. She found it curious. The High King dead. His brother uncrowned. The murderer never found. And he was still here, in this room, with the other witness. He was still breathing. [break][break]

Jin-Hwa couldn't quite convince herself that he did it. Something about him suggested that he would. She saw the look on his face when his father fell. But there was a difference between desire and action-- an ever-blurred line. She wanted him to be guilty. That did not make it so. [break][break]

It had been so long since she had been challenged. Since she had allowed it. And now? She wondered at how she should destroy him. It should be so easy. [break][break]

But there was a complexity there. A duality. Something that suggested to her that he wasn't all talk-- that destroying him was no easy task. It made her more excited than it should. [break][break]

The fae were the land, and the undersea fae were not so different. Her mother was the sea itself-- vicious, changing, powerful. Jin-Hwa had that blood. She wasn't just a girl. She wasn't just another person in this room. She was a storm.  [break][break]
