He was nearly ten years his sister's senior, and took it upon himself to look after her. Elora was a kind soul with a poet's heart and a fondness for flowers, and the family doted on her, especially since she had been born early and barely survived. Julius almost refused to leave her to attend school, but any ambitions for his future would lead him to the Iris Academy—unless he managed to marry into a richer and more titled family—so to school he went. | Julius studied at the Iris Academy under the school of War, despite the fact that he fancied himself a philosopher. It seemed a more concrete skill to know how to direct a regiment and bear arms, and besides, it gave him a chance to learn strategy. Julius found himself quite successful at this; he could predict how people would act or respond given their feelings and personalities, and he planned accordingly. He had a certain air of confidence that garned a fair amount of company, particularly from those of his peers who lacked confidence in themselves. These people, Julius found, were not as rare among the Gentry as he might have suspected, and it was curiously easy to direct them where he wanted them to go. | Sometime after Julius had graduated school and begun learning to manage his family's estate, he recieved the news that Elora was being courted and planned to marry. He was instantly concerned—for one, marriage was unusal among the fae when not for political benefit, and for another, the man she'd chosen seemed determined to sow discord between the siblings. The fae she sought to marry, Theon Varys, was encouraging her to become more independent and less attached to her family, by which Julius felt threatened. He orchestrated the circumstances so that Theon ended up arranged by his parents to marry another girl, barring him from Elora, likely forever. Heartbroken and knowing nothing of Julius's involvement, Elora saw no point in continuing life without the freedom her love had attempted to give her—or without him. Shaken by the loss, Julius spent several years afterward traveling the Faewild, seeking answers or closure but avoiding the truth of what he'd done. His mystery and dark charm drew many lovers to him, but they were all younger, all more naive than he. Julius told him that they reminded him of kinder times, of the things he'd lost, but would not admit even to himself the full truth. He may not have been able to lie, but he could omit. And then there was Guinivere Marcel. He'd thought she would be another conquest, perhaps a tool, given her thorns and her ability to lie. She became not only a lover, but a player in a scheme that might just give Julius enough control to satisfy him. |
personality
Julius has a respectable number of skills, but accepting blame is not one of them. He claims to be driven by nostalgia for simpler, happier times, both as a guise of false emotional intelligence and an excuse for taking advantage of those younger and/or more trusting than himself. This insistence that he is in pursuit of peace also appears in a refusal to deal with disagreements; he tends to redirect such conversations by growing upset about the conflict itself until the other person agrees to drop it. The thing he is much less quick to admit is a fondness for control—he likes to surround himself with people he can manipulate if need be. This is also what set him on a quest for power.

Gemini's position was, to say the least, precarious. With his brother barely balanced on the throne and his life spent rolling his mother's reputation up a hill, day after day, Gemini was surrounded by the potential to fall. The only thing left to do was to craft his own wings, to build them with the only hands that he could trust. But the process took time; it took scavenging for materials, it took ingenuity.
Luckily, his peers generally left him alone to scheme, as if disgrace was contagious. It may as well have been, in Faerie.
Gemini had taken to wandering the grounds; there was enough of the High Court in his veins that he could feel the pull of the earth, the heartbeat of the land in the movement of life in and under the soil. The air in his lungs was his; it was the east wind, breath of the sunrise. He could feel the stirring of change. He just had to bide his time.
The grounds of Iris overgrew into a forest at the edges like uncut hair, wild and sprawling. Gemini stood before the first cluster of trees, facing the cloudless sky, silver with winter. It rarely snowed outside of the North Court, but the air had the sharp, sterile scent of at least an oncoming frost. It pricked at his senses, prodding them into vigilance.
Something was coming. Gemini trusted his instincts. He needed to catch the right wind to take off, after all.
