Zhiyun grew up much slower than many of the fae nowadays. This is partially simple cultural. His family sheltered him more and allowed him to take care of his growth at his own rate. This caused a level of maturity that many around him take to mean he is much older than he actually his. Zhiyun is preoccupied with history, with storytelling, with the weight words can carry. He is often distractable and taken by flights of fancy, but they are all related to the same goal-- to make sure that his

Jin-hwa faced the library doors. She had been here again and again when she was younger. It was a strange fascination of hers when she was growing up. Strategy games. Learning to play. The librarian who taught her.

And he was there now, just like she remembered, hair gray at his temples, a ledger in front of him and quill in hand. And her, a princess swathed in pearls, hair loose and flowing. In front of most, she was imperious, dangerous. Here she was just a girl again, timorous and desperate to impress.

Father. Who would she be if that had been a word she knew? She called every single male on the queens council that title. She and every one of her siblings did. A nod to the idea that their parentage was a mystery. But it wasn’t just the shape of their eyes or the way they smiled. It was the feeling of a kindred spirit, not a flint to her spark like she had found in Gemini, but more temperate burn. She wished to emulate him. She doubted she ever could.
[break][break]
“You taught me strategy when I was a child,” she said, moving to pause before him. He looked up, blinking once, twice. She had given no word of introduction.
[break][break]
“Princess.” He said. “Jin-Hwa. It has been some time.”
[break][break]
She didn’t know what to say. There were no words. There were too many words. She hesitated for a moment, two. She took a deep breath.
[break][break]
“You taught me odds. What do you do when the odds are not in your favor? What do you do when–” she paused. Her voice shook. “When you can’t win.”
[break][break]
A blood crown. She thought, dimly, of the crown of Elfhame, spilled into a puddle of wine. She thought of the murderess high queen. She thought of mortal myths, of icarus and the rule of temperance. She thought of games she had almost lost and things she couldn’t win. She thought of Gemini.

“I am a scholar, princess.” He said hesitantly. “A philosopher, at times. But what– what do you speak of?”
[break][break]
Jin-Hwa couldn’t answer the question. Not honestly. Not explain the rules or describe the game. Because they were playing no child’s game here, no game of love or even war. This was a game of crowns and empire and blood. Again and again, throughout history, blood was the price.
[break][break]
“A game.” she said. She did not say enough. Some piece of him understood anyway.
[break][break]
“I am sometimes a philosopher,” he started hesitantly. “Often a scholar. But for a moment, I will be a storyteller.”

[break] To understand Zhiyun, one must understand his father, for some might say that his life was fated from the beginning. [break][break] His father was born 500 years prior to this current day, in the deep sea, before the sea was a united kingdom, His father was born in what was and still is an independent kingdom to the open sea, and lived there for the first two centuries of his life. [break][break] However, as the whispers of war began to start, he realized that his homeland would soon turn into a battleground. Zhiyun's father declared for the young usurper queens instead of the current localized queen of the deep and fought in the so called "Queen's war." that put the current Queen of the Open Sea on the throne. [break][break] After the war, he met the woman who would be Zhiyun's mother. While their relationship was originally opposed by her father, Zhiyun's father killed him and married her. The murder was their town's best kept secret. It was in this circumstance that he was born born: a strange land and a not- quite-secret child. [break][break] | He grew up to love stories more than anything else. His mother was a noble and his father had been employed as a knight, but now he settled down with her and the three of them together started on what would be Zhiyun's life long goal: building a library underwater. [break][break] This was obviously an insane prospect. The undersea fae carried on their stories through song. His mother was a brilliant musician, his father a story- teller. They had a jeweled knife from the deep sea that kept parchment dry underwater. This was the main focal point of their research. [break][break] However, some years into this research, his parents grew tired. Undersea fae cannot drown, but they surrendered themselves to the sea, simply releasing their lives during a storm. They left their secrets and their dreams to their son | [break] Unlike many fae, Zhiyun was deeply shaped by his parents. By the time they died, they had left imprints on his heart that he would never forget. And while they had a library at home, he set his eyes to the real prize-- a library in the capital city. A library for the court of the undersea. He made the journey to the Queen's court and swore himself into her service. She was intrigued by his project and allowed him reign of the resources he might need to set up his library. His father's knife came back to be useful once more. Through researching the magic that enchanted the knife-- magic now sealed off from the open ocean-- he was able to create an entirely dry and safe sanctuary under the waves to store his precious manuscripts. Whether this kind of magic is really allowed anymore is up for debate, but this was his life-long goal, and he was not going to give up until he had achieved it. [break][break] He never showed much interest in lovers. While he may have taken a few, his true love turned out to be right in front of him-- the Queen of the Undersea. She was not an easy woman to love, and certainly not a safe woman to love. But she loved him, and for a year, that was enough for the both of them. A year of fidelity from a Queen may not sound like much, but for the daughter that was born, it turned out to be a threat. No one male is ever meant to be given a claim to the throne, so the paternity of the Queen's daughters is always meant to be a secret. Of course, Zhiyun's family was never particularly good with secrets. [break][break] Family: In-Su Aukai: Father [break] Canta Aukai: Mother [break] Jin-Hwa Mei: Daughter [break] |
