history
Childhood | Teenage Years | Adulthood |
Sapphira was the youngest of the Sokolov children, the three of them. She had two siblings; Veliakaia and Shasha. Shasha was the oldest and her older brother. She always despised him. Veliakaia was too soft for her taste, but she had a taste for art that Sapphira could respect. Still, Sapphira always saw herself as seperate from all of her family. She would never truly know the full truth of why, but when she discovers it, it will not surprise her. After Velikaia was born, her parents betrothed her to Rex Hugh almost immediately. The Sokolovs always preferred to marry up. Shasha had been engaged to Juno Enigma from a similarly young age. But this left the Sokolovs with an issue; they had no true heir. Her parents planned to have a third child, but they were injured in an occult magic experiment that made it seem impossible for them to have children again. Determined not to let the Sokolov line, Justinian Sokolov called a favor from the Enigmas, a favor they owed him from his continued support and the hand of his son. Sullivan and Alaric Enigma both personally oversaw a ritual that resulted in the birth of Sapphira. What this ritual was is a closely-guarded secret. It is known to have involved blood magic and a blackthorn tree. Sapphira was never qutie right, but she was alive. That was enough and more than enough for her parents, even when Daria and Justinian later died from the wounds they suffered from their magic experimentation. When they passed, Sapphira was sixteen. Daria Sokolov: Mother Justinian Sokolov: Father Velikaia Sokolov: Older Sister Shasha Sokolov: Older Brother | Sapphira was raised to be the Sokolov heir. She was taught magic, both occult and regular. She was taught manners and money management. She was not sent to Iris, instead, kept at home during her early years when her parents realized they were dying. She witnessed their love personally and decided as a young child that it was a waste of time. They may have died holding each other. They still died. Perhaps it was the harsh winter climate or the harsh expectations placed on her, but she grew up vicious and brutal. Her older brother did nothing to curb this. He encouraged her to pick a husband who had no claim to another throne, but did have enough money to profit them, and she did, marrying Marcus Coult from the West at the age of eighteen. The two were cordial enough to begin with, and Sapphira took great pride in being the heir to Illiteux, her family home. She was as careful a steward as she could be, but she never stopped trying to recreate the experiment that had injured her parents, even if she wasn't quite sure what it was. She knew it had something to do with creation. She would find out. | Illiteux was a home built into a mountain, with six gold-tipped towers rising into the coldest reaches of the Northern Sky. It was one of the houses furthest north, and as most of it was buried into a mountain, it was secluded and perfect for experimentation. Sapphira exploited this. However, her great dedication to her craft had consequences. She discovered her husband had taken a lover, something that would not have bothered her if they had not been nearly five years younger than him. This was her chance and her justification. While she did not really need a reason to kill him, as she had been planning to all along, this was another layer in her defense. She offered the child a choice; to become her apprentice or die with their lover. This individual, who was born of a low-ranking family and had been given little choice in the matter up until now, agreed to join her gladly. Thus, at twenty-five, Sapphira began in earnest, rich enough from her husband and family's money to be well-supplied for a century. She remained undisturbed until she was discovered by a certain hunter, who will soon be feeling the full force of her wrath. |
personality
To think Sapphira less brutal than her older brother or less cunning than any fae would be a mistake, and it is a mistake that generally lands you dead. Plenty of people have underestimated her. Plenty of those same people have died. Her brutality is more subtle and more underhanded, and her principles are less noble, but they are both still there.
She doesn't believe in justice. She believes in vengeance. She believes in remembering every slight and making people regret those slights. She believes in using her beauty for her own ends, just like she uses her magic. Everything she does is for a goal, and that goal is revenge. You could never tie her to a specific murder. That doesn't mean she hasn't committed any. She values wealth, but more than that, she values power. She is not loyal, not trustful, not honorable. She is alive. She wants to be the strongest, and if that means doing something no one else will, that is fine. She will do it.

writing sample
Jin-Hwa was furious, and she was always gorgeous when she was angry.
Some ladies look lovely when they cried. Cassie was one such girl. Her eyes seemed wider, more honest. It made her eyelashes since. She was never so pretty as when she cried, except for when she laughed.
Jin-Hwa didn't cry enough to know what she looked like. She had one memory of it, one, and that memory was accompanied by the taste of blood in her mouth, of shards glinting gold on the ground, of her mother's crown. Blood and gold and a crown. And her, crying. They always went together. They always would.
But Jin-Hwa knew she was never so lovely as when she was angry. She wasn't pretty when she laughed-- it looked forced. She wasn't lovely when she was trying to be kind. She was gorgeous when she was angry. She was built to be.
Her eyes shone, her hair flashed, her cheekbones seemed sharper. It had horrified her when she was younger. Back then, she was scared of the odd looks her older siblings gave her when she got really angry, like something was wrong with her. The way her mother evaluated her always bothered her, until she saw herself in the reflection of an ornamental shield.
Her mother always kept items of war in the palace, a promise and a reminder. They were warriors at heart. Jin-Hwa trained with the sword, with their tridents, and was always reminded that she may at any moment be called to lead a war. She understood that as a child. She didn't understand what she was seeing.
She had been angry. Jin-Hwa didn't remember why, now. Probably someone hadn't done what she had expected. Probably she had lost a game to her sister. Probably it was nothing important at all.
But even so young, she saw it. She saw how she looked lovelier, looked braver, looked like her mother. Looked like a queen. She didn't share the librarian's eyes in that moment. Murmurs of who her father was didn't matter. She looked like the mother that had beaten her and praised her. She looked like the queen who had brought peace to the realm and ripped it open again. It terrified her.
Jin-Hwa ran. As a child, as daughter with no mother, no father, there was no one to run to, so she just ran. She hid herself away with a book and barely spoke for a week. And then came Cassie.
Cassie didn't know anything. Cassie barged into her life with a smile and some grapes, meant to be a luxury as they didn't grow under the sea. Cassie inserted herself into Jin-Hwa's life and told her she was pretty when she smiled, and for a moment, Jin-Hwa believed her.
The fae couldn't lie but Jin-Hwa had been lying to herself.
There were no grapes that would fix this-- not even drowning it in wine would. She had gone too far and she had seen it in Nikolai's face, but whatever love she had for him had to be killed now. He didn't love her. Probably, he never had. And if knowing that was painful, it didn't matter, because pain and blood and tears always followed a crown. Always. So she had gone too far and yet she couldn't stop, not now, not until she had gone as far as there was to go, not until there was no more wall, not until she had burned it to the ground. And fire didn't burn underwater, so her time was running out.
She stopped in front of Cassie's door, flexing her hands once, twice. She hadn't fixed things with Nikolai at all. She had just scared him, but that would be good enough. It would have to be good enough. He wasn't the blood price for her crown and she knew it. She just didn't know if she had the strengthen to pay the real price. Love that turned to hatred was strong, but what about love that never got to bloom. There was no way to kill that. It was just a promise. It was just a premonition.
And now she was facing Cassandra, the prophet that was never believed, the princess that never was. She opened the door and faced her, and knew that love lost had to hurt more than love that never was, it simply had to, because what would hurt more than this. What could?
"You forget yourself," she said. She had been saying it a lot. Was she the one forgetting? Or was this just remembering? Remembering who she was. Remembering what she had to do?
She was always going to be her mother's daughter.
