| Cerdian was the third son of the Aurelius line. The spare of the spare, some said, destined for no particular greatness save for what might be earned in court or on the battlefield. The latter would be a rarity, surely, given how long it had been since a war had arisen between the courts. Still, he was trained as any prince should be, tutored in the ways of politics, tactics, intrigue, magic, and combat. He was eleven when his father was assassinated and his eldest brother assumed the Winter throne. They did not share a mother, and while Haldric's whispered to him about securing his position, Cerdian's removed him from the Winter palace. | Cerdian's position in his teen years was precarious. During this period, his mother kept him well away from the public eye, using an array of tutors to teach him what he needed to know. The assumption remained that he would serve as the third son should, and so he was trained in warfare and politics and rulership from his position as prince. He grew skilled with magic and his sword, and he learned to be as cold as the ice of his court. Give them nothing, his mother said, not even my life is worth enough to be a weapon against you. He was taught to be an island unto himself- commanding but never truly caring. | Haldric died three days after he took his first consort, the female with him. Cerdian knew that he would be next, like he knew the ebb and flow of his magic. The day after Calidus was crowned, the assassins came. Cerdian survived- his mother did not, and despite all of her teaching, that loss still hurt. It hurt enough that he felt only that pain when he froze those responsible and watched them shatter. That pain lingered when he challenged his brother, knowing that the attempts on his life would continue as long as they both lived. He was unwilling to spend a life running or hiding, so he slew him. It was not an easy battle, nor was it without cost. He was publicly a kinslayer, marked by the blood on his hands as witnessed by too many to ever deny. Still, none could challenge his claim to the throne. He was crowned, and he has held his crown for nearly two decades. There is peace, and now the nobles press, wondering when he will take a consort. Cerdian himself remains unwilling, the loss of so much life still too fresh in his mind. |
