welcome to Midsummer
Welcome to the wilds of Faerie, where deception and intrigue wind through the courts of the fae. Revels overflow with excess, beauty, and betrayal, while the students of the Iris Academy learn to take their place in a world where nothing is ever as it seems. Now, as a blue moon rises, the reigning High Court prepares to make peace with the Undersea, but peace is not something that rises easily from the ashes. Beware wandering into a faerie circle, mortals, and never strike a bargain with the fae; they may not be able to lie, but they are always hiding something.
Midsummer is a character-driven, fae folklore, text-based RPG site, founded 3 September 2023 by admins SeaJem + M. Site Lore
The Faewild is comprised of four Cardinal Courts, plus the ruling High Court and the Undersea. The Seelie Courts, North and South, are slightly more traditional and straightforward (as much as the fae ever are), which their Unseelie counterparts to the East and West are duplicitous and wild.
Farthest south, beneath the waves, lies the Undersea, home to the pearl-encrusted Sunken City. The Undersea fae are a proud people—perhaps too much so, according to some of their counterparts on dry land. All of the Faewild is ruled by the High Court, whose power is personified in the High King and Queen. By wearing this crown, they take on the spirit of the Faewild; their hearts beat with the heart of the land. Beware, and choose your words carefully: the fae are a capricious and tricky people, as fickle as they are cunning, and their rulers are the most of all.

Someone who can't see the oponent standing right in front of them cannot defeat the opponent that lies beyond
Chao Li found his sword shoved back at him. Her nails pressed against his chest. He grit his teeth. She thought she could pin him. As though he only carried one sword. As though he only carried one blade. As thought he only carried one weapon.
The pressure was intense. She was clearly strong. It didn't matter. He carried iron.
"So we aren't doing this in a civilized manner." he muttered to himself. No one let him forget that he was half mortal, but in duels the fae died just as fast.
He reached down with his one free hand and pulled one of his two iron knives out of his boot, thrusting it into her stomach. It shouldn't kill her. Shouldn't. He was still interested in no one dying but he would be fine if she was the only one who died.
The pressure released, if only a little. He drew his other sword. Not iron. The smiths refused to work with it. He had made those knives himself but he was no swordsmith. He didn't mind. They were effective. A complimentary pair. Twin blades crossed in front of him.
He saw that she had come unarmed.
p.s. I am imagining she took a step back after getting stabbed.

[attr="class","box1a"] Amaris gave a spluttering, choking gasp and staggered back, eyes wide. That blade was iron; she could tell from the burn. It should have killed her. But the hungry strength consuming her found an outlet in the wound, and its edges crackled and seemed to begin to seal. She screamed like an animal, grabbed the knife by the hilt, and tore it out, but she still sank to her knees and couldn't get herself to rise. Extraordinary though her strength was, it was all feeding the force that was keeping her alive. She dragged her head upwards to look up at the knight, blue fire in her eyes. She wanted to try to drive the knife into his thigh, but he was armored. He was armored, and she didn't have enough left to fight him. But she couldn't stay and be captured, all of this for nothing. So, like the animal that she was, she turned and she ran. [attr="class","box1"] The knights standing by the dais had all clustered around Ambrose, Princess Mei, and the High King, shields at the ready, though frankly Gemini thought that their lone counterpart was doing a perfectly adequate job of dispatching the would-be attacker. Two of them, however, broke ranks and rushed over to him and Ophelia. "Princess. Come with us."Gemini gently lifted Ophelia's hand from his arm, barely in time for one of the knights to pull her behind his shield and rush her up to the dais. People were still screaming, and the crowd was beginning to flood out of the pavilion in all directions. Well, the Faewild liked peace about as much as it liked constancy. Gemini looked to the other knight. "May I request the pleasure of your company as well?" he asked drily, wrist resting against the hilt of his rapier. "Or does the crown desire to make a gladiator of me, and have me defend my life for sport?" "I do not speak for the crown, but the helm wishes you would not talk so much." The knight placed a gauntleted hand between Gemini's shoulder blades and steered him towards the dais, with much less urgency than Ophelia had been taken. They never seemed to know if they should call him Your Highness or not. Gemini allowed himself to be guided to the dais, though this meant that he had no excuse to argue when he was deposited between his father and Princess Mei. He cut his eyes sideways at her, curious at what her demeanor might be. He wasn't certain that she would've orchestrated something like this. But he was surprised that she allowed herself to be protected. Then again, so had he. Something knocked into his opposite shoulder. Gemini glanced over; the first thing he saw was Ambrose being dragged to his knees. The second thing he saw was the thing doing the dragging—that being the dead weight of their father, eyes shut, face waxy and ashen. Ambrose cried out. Gemini did not. Gemini took this in. He calculated the previous signs he had observed. He noted that the circle of knights had their attention directed outwards. And then, with a glass emptiness in his heart, Gemini looked away. Standing quickly, quietly, Calanthe could see a fight in the midst of the floor. A woman fighting like wildfire, a man fighting back, and bystanders caught on the fringes of the battle. Leaving her glass behind, Calanthe swiftly slipped away from her table and towards the nearest doors; whatever that mess on the floor was she wanted no part of it and it would be best to make a quick escape before it spread to her solitary corner. She picked her way carefully across the floor, keeping one eye on the fight and one on the spilled wine and shattered glass strewn across the ground that had resulted from dropped glasses as the crowd panicked and fled. Slipping through the doors, she spared a final glance towards the room as a strange movement caught her eye, someone was falling. An unfortunate casualty of the fight perhaps? An overly excited noble? No, as the cry of the crown prince pierced the air, she realized that her guesses were all wrong. The King himself had fallen, glassy eyed and still, as dead as the flowers crushed under the feet of the crowd.

I'll get you out on the floor, Shimmering beautiful And when I break it's in a million pieces
Guinivere watched the revel move around the centers of power like planets in orbit. What they thought were the centers of power. It was all just a game of perception, really.
The fae were curious in that way. Not like humans. The fae cared very little for truth, really. They couldn't lie. But they could say whatever they believed. It made her think about how if you lied to yourself long enough, you came to think it was the truth. It made her think about how she couldn't tell the difference, half the time.
It made her think about how Julius thought he could teach her to forget her humanness, to shed the pieces of it she didn't need like a skin. It made her think about how she couldn't, even now, let go of a history she didn't have. She still made herself remember Chinese, even when she wasn't supposed to know it. She still kept the bracelet her mother had made her. She wondered if her mother kept the other one. She wondered if her mother threw hers away or burned it or buried it. She wondered if, back in the mortal world, there was a gravestone with the name Guinivere Marcel on it. She wondered if her mother wore white flowers at her funeral.
She wished it was that simple. She wished her past self could have stayed dead.
She heard screaming from the south court's area. She saw a knight fight back the intruder. She was strangely still. To any passerby she might look like she was in shock. Really, she was just waiting.
The high king slumped down. The half-prince turned away. The undersea girl looked at him. She looked at the king. His crown hit the grown. She started screaming. Guinivere allowed herself the smallest smile. The revel parted. She had a full view of the scene-- fae screaming, blood and wine mixing on the floor, knight rushing the king.
She met the prince's eyes. The poisoners prince. Perhaps he was pleased. Perhaps his mother was. She could never please her own mother. This would have to be enough. She was a born thief anyway.
She smiled. She nodded. Then Guinivere took one step back and did what she did best. She disappeared.

If I cannot be better than them I will Be so much worse
Jin-hwa had been ushered back to the pavilion by knights. It was curious. In the undersea, they would protect the monarchy last. A queen should be willing and able to kill to defend herself. Her subjects were considered more important. But they were not in the undersea.
She knew something was off just from the look on Gemini's face. She refused to call him Enigma, even privately. He didn't deserve the title. He didn't deserve the implication that the throne would ever be his.
Was violence really so uncommon here? To her, it wasn't a proper party without one death. But the randomness-- the way it seemed to be without rhyme or reason-- that was unnerving. That wasn't easy to fight.
She turned to the High King. Supposedly, he had the power of their land. Why wasn't he using it? And then she saw.
He wasn't just slumped over. He was falling. She looked up. The trees were withering. The flowers adorning the revel were losing color. Her eyes widened. She heard a clang. She expected it to be a wineglass.
It was the crown. The High Crown of faerie. It slid to the ground. The king collapsed. Jin-Hwa was silent. She had been taught not to scream. Not to make any noise. Then she saw Gemini turn towards his father. Turn away. His face looked set.
Then, Jin-Hwa made a decision. She knew, in a way, it was a declaration. That they were enemies now. That she would destroy him like she had destroyed so many other things. She opened her mouth.
She met his eyes and she screamed.

[attr="class","ptpost"]Silas watched the chaos unfold with a deeply amused expression. As expected, Chao Li was the first to engage the danger. As much as he enjoyed causing trouble, combat wasn't his specialty. He'd let Crowley deal with the difficult stuff. There wasn't a doubt in his mind that Crowley couldn't handle this. He had more interesting plays to watch. His eyes turned towards the High King and his motley crew. The heart of the land didn't seem to be doing so well. A smirk crossed his face. Things might just get interesting.[break][break]
As if on cue, a scream broke out. It seemed the heart of the world lacked strength. Instead of shock or despair, the information broker was delighted. It would soon be time for him to make his exit, but first, he had a few things to attend to.[break][break]
