history
Childhood | Teenage Years | Adulthood |
Amaris was originally born in the West Court to craftsman parents who served the ruling family. Her parents were often overworked and mistreated by their patron, which meant that Amaris was often left to her own devices and allowed to run wild. She became rapidly self-sufficient, while simultaneously learning a bitterness towards authority figures and, in particular, the ruling classes. She already didn't like being told what to do, since she was unused to it with her parents being so often absent, but this certainly didn't help. She had no interest in learning her parents' trade, but went to school regardless, hoping to find a calling that would satisfy her. | At the Iris Academy, Amaris became a bit of a troublemaker—already a student of the School of War, she had a tendency to break the rules out of a sheer desire to be contrarian, and perhaps let off some of her anger at the world. It was at the Academy that she began to meet other young fae with similar ideas, visions of a perfect anarchy, but the more she fell in with them, the more she grew apart from her parents. They had already accepted their place in life, and found themselves disturbed by the bitterness making itself evident in their daughter. Their response—to tighten the discipline that had been lacking for most of her formative years—came too late to be well-received. Feeling judged, stifled, and misunderstood, by the time Amaris left school, she left home as well, expecting to never return. | After school, Amaris joined with a handful of those same students as well as a few others to form a loose band of revolutionaries. The war with the Undersea had been going on for some time now, and rather than taking either side, this group stood opposed to the structures that were allowing the war to continue in the first place and wanted to end it on their own terms. They called themselves Wolfsbane, insinuating that they were poison, also because they viewed themselves as having the communal support, family dynamic of a wolf pack. However, there is no revolution without resistance, and in this case, Amaris became the target: a curse was placed on her that tied her to the moon, causing an endless cycle of weakness and madness, sickness and uncontrollable strength. To protect the rest of Wolfsbane, when she realized the effects of the curse, she set off on her own, disappearing one night without explanation. Since then, she has remained solitary, for fear of hurting anyone she might stay with for too long. |

writing sample
Whatever it is that has a hold of Jordan will no longer let her speak. She leans close and flicks one of the curls at his brow, but whatever she might have hoped to say fades when Alby looks up and meets her eyes. His expression is so…torn open, she feels like she should avert her gaze. It’s like staring into a bleeding wound. But Alby cups her cheek with his free hand, keeping her there, refusing to let her look away. A shine rises in his eyes. Jordan wonders if he’s crying. She thinks she might be. All she can hear is his breath, soft and shattered.
“Jordan,” he says, and his voice breaks. “Are you sure your da didn’t do it?”
She rests her forehead against his. His eyes are all she can see. “Certain. As certain as I’ve been of anything.”
“Okay. Okay.” Alby shuts his eyes, and Jordan does too, and then she thinks they might both be crying, clinging to one another as if it’ll hold them together. “Okay,” he repeats.
Jordan pulls him into her arms, and he fits perfectly against the cradle of her body, his face tucked beside her neck, her cheek pressed to his curls. She holds him so tightly she’d dare the Tides to take him. “Okay,” she says, and it reminds her of the Suli chants that Stefan taught her, the songs they sung after the dancing had faded and the fires were only embers. Songs for the ending of things. “It’s okay,” she lies, for she is a liar and the daughter of one. “You’re okay.”
special situations
Amaris bears a curse that ties her life-force to the moon. As the moon wanes, her strength wanes with it and she sickens; As it waxes, she gains strength that rapidly escapes her control until, on full moons, she loses control of her mind and becomes a danger to herself and others. This curse was not the original cause of her isolation from fae society, but it has certainly perpetuated it, along with the belief that she is destined to live and survive alone.
