history
Childhood | Teenage Years | Adulthood |
Family: Mother: Sujaya Yadav Father: Kumail Yadav Siblings: Younger brother- Teo Yadav (four years younger) Younger sisters- Reyi and Meera Yadav (Twins, eight years younger) Adem loves his family too much for his (and their) own good. He knows that they love him, but whether he is worthy and deserving of that love, well, he grapples with the answer to that every day. He feels like a traitor when he’s around them, causing him to spend less and less time with them, and thus emotionally distances himself from them more and more. Adem knows what he has done. They do not. Born to two parents who work as servants to the ruling family of the south court, Adem is the golden boy of his family, to put it quite plainly. He denies that he is the parents’ favorite, though all of the younger siblings seem to think that he is. He was always the type of boy that old neighborhood ladies would compliment constantly, never finding any fault in Adem Yadav. “How smart!” “How polite!” “How good looking!” “That boy will grow up to do wonderful things!” they would say. If only they knew the pressure that this had put him under, if only they knew how it had built up until he cracked during his last year at school, if only they knew that his most secret hobby was hiding in plain sight, that he was on track to become the exact opposite of everything they thought he was. He didn’t have many hobbies, only reading, writing, and studying the little historical documents that he could get his hands on. Adem was not an outside person, and when his mother kicked him out of the house for some fresh air, it didn’t matter to him, as long as he had something to climb up into a tree with and read. He was positively overjoyed to leave for the Academy, though it was only because it meant he could go deeper into his studies. | Ages 12/13: Adem had a rough start to school, he never talked to anyone in his dorm, and never made any friends. People classified him as a loner, even though they all knew he was really quite nice. He started his classes well, and was and average student. Ages 14/15/16: Adem began to branch out a little bit, becoming friends with a few people. None of them stuck with him, though, and even though he knew he could turn to them if needed, he simply didn’t feel like it. He applied himself to his studies and passed his finals. Age: 16 The summer between his sixth year was traumatic, to say the least. It had taken everything away from him and his brother, and it was his own fault. Teo lost his leg in a fire after going into a burning building to save his cat. Adem had seen that the building was on fire again and went in to save his brother. He was mainly unscathed, except for a bad burn on the side of his neck, but his brother ended up losing an entire leg. Adem does not know the day nor the hour when he will admit to his family that he knew how the fire started, and that it was because of his own carelessness that Teo had lost a whole leg. Adem spent most of his time in the library during the last year. He spent time with Teo at home when he was on break, but at school he saw no one else. Except Tsukishima, the girl who's wellbeing his parents' employers had tasked him with preserving. Maybe his affinity for spending time with only his little brother and his charge was a coping mechanism for the waves of guilt he felt as he saw Teo, hobbling along with his mismatched legs. Maybe it was an indirect form of apology. If so, it wasn’t enough. It would never be enough. Adem cheated on his exams that year, due to the job he earned from a noble family of his court being a bit too much. Just that assignment alone was a handful for anyone. But all that mattered was that his exams were passed. | N/A |
personality
Adem is not quiet, but not loud either. He has a gentle, calm aura that hides the turmoil inside very well. He is the sort of person who never is suspected of anything, which drives him insane, knowing full well what he’s done. He's the golden boy of the family, with the best grades, best reputation, best behavior. He knows he never deserved this title, he knows he is far from perfect. Adem's littlest secret is that he barely scraped by on his finals last term, and only did so because he cheated . There, he admitted it. Adem Agni Yadav is a cheat.
writing sample
Nothing. It was most certainly something. He was intrigued now, and felt that the girl had been intrigued about him, too. Her prior statement had proven it. He wanted to ask her what her name was, he needed to know her story. He couldn't figure her out. She was blind, she thought he was delicious(?), and she was young. Too young to be alone in a place like this. And yet there was something in her demeanor that showed him she most definitely had seen way, way worse. Why was he drawn to her like a moth to a flame? He knew how it ended for the moth, being the catalyst of many Lepidopteran deaths himself, what with his little incendiary hobby.
He glanced at the girl again and sighed. Adem really should just go home. He was exhausted, and probably didn’t have the mental stamina to go back to the store and experiment without burning the place down. He rubbed a hand over his face and drained the rest of his Gillywater. Another side eye at the girl next to him. That was it. He was leaving before the jumble of thoughts in his brain took control and he ended up doing something bad. Like burning the place down levels of bad.
Adem gathered his bag and slung it across his shoulders. He hoped he wouldn’t get caught being in possession of these ingredients, not like they were illegal to have, exactly, but all of them together would definitely raise some suspicion. Alright, he shook his head slightly, time to go. He stood, laying a few coins on the counter for the bartender and then turning to leave. He scooted the barstool back in under the bar, looked around a little and nodded. His eyes were set on the door. It was time to go home.
special situations
Adem is not the most mentally healthy person. It doesn't affect his time in school or while working, as he hides it extremely well. But the guilt that he feels for the loss of Teo's leg is incredibly strong, and has festered into a deep pattern of depression and self loathing. He doesn't take care of himself the way he should. He doesn't believe he deserves it.
