| Though the paternity of the children of the Undersea Queen is meant to remain a mystery, there were only so many humans within the court. A handful of changelings or gifted mortals who had earned the favor of the nobility- and one who apparently earned the favor of the queen. Velvet was too obviously half-human for her lineage to be truly secret, though those of the court seemed to pretend as though this weren't the case. At least, so far as the 'rules' went. Nothing protected Velvet from their sharp teeth and cruel hands until she found a sister to cling to. Two were stronger than one, and it was then that Velvet was able to begin learning rather than running and hiding. | When she reached the age of eleven, Velvet attended the Institute of Pearls. By that time, she knew the brutality and manipulations of the court and had proven that her own form was less like the creeping of an eel and more like the crushing jaws of a shark. She learned to be crafty and to weave through the manipulations, but she also learned the joys of directness. When faced with the bluntness of a battering ram, many fae would lose their proverbial footing and be left floundering to pick themselves up again. Given that her people were at war when she first began school, Velvet focused her studies in combat and magic that would be useful both offensively and defensively. Fortunately, she was never given reason to use that magic, but now she finds herself with a particular skillset in a time of peace. By the time she graduated, the war was winding down. | As a token of peace, Velvet was offered as the Emissary of the Undersea in the High Court. Though she had a direct tie to the Queen, she was also a middle, half-human daughter. Expendable, should hostilities break out again. She took to the role with a good deal less grace than she would have liked, and is still learning what it entails. She is young, especially for their kind, and feels more like she's been thrown into a lion's den than offered a position of honor- as was hinted. Fortunately, she knows how to make allies, and she will most certainly need them in her current position. |

Cerdian preferred to dedicate himself to governance rather than parties, but this one was of particular significance. That, and he had learned long ago that to ignore public appearances was to draw the wrong sort of attention. As such, he lingered with those who had not taken to the dance floor, entertaining the chatter of those who would seek the favor of the North King. He was still dressed in his heavy, dark furs, a chill emanating from him. Those who did approach him found themselves braving the glacial emptiness of his dark eyes, two yawning voids of unreadable black offering no hint of his thoughts or emotions. He was cold and collected, a boulder standing stalwartly in the wind and rain of the courtiers.
Sipping from his wine, Cerdian watched the goings-on of the party. A crown of silver and diamond sat atop his dark hair like woven ice, glittering in the fae lights. The food arrayed for the guests did not pique his desire, and he doubted he would consume more than one cup of wine, given how carefully his personal guard had scoured the beverage before passing it to him. Hopefully, he would be able to make his appearance and then depart. There were, after all, more pressing matters that required his attention.
