[attr="class","nilett"] The Cardinal Courts
[break][attr="class","nico"] The faewild is comprised of four Cardinal Courts, plus the ruling High Court and the Undersea. The Seelie Courts, North and South, are slightly more traditional and straightforward (as much as the fae ever are), which their Unseelie counterparts to the East and West are duplicitous and wild.
[break][break][attr="class","nilettl"] The Undersea
[break][attr="class","nico"] Farthest south, beneath the waves, lies the Undersea, home to the pearl-encrusted Sunken City. The Undersea fae are a proud people—perhaps too much so, according to some of their counterparts on dry land. They have a matriarchal government; the Undersea is always ruled by a queen, and she does not marry. Instead, her heirs will have many different fathers, whose identities are kept secret. [break]
The Undersea fae also have an increased talent for casting glamours with their voices. This "siren song" is a learned skill, and it the only kind of glamour that works on other fae as opposed to just mortals. It is taught, among other subjects, at the Institute of Pearls; though this school is less advanced than Iris, the Undersea fae still take great pride in it.

[attr="class","nilett"] The High Court
[break][attr="class","nico"] All of the Faewild is ruled by the High Court, whose power is personified in the High King and Queen. By wearing this crown, they take on the spirit of the Faewild; their hearts beat with the heart of the land. Beware, and choose your words carefully: the fae are a capricious and tricky people, as fickle as they are cunning, and their rulers are the most of all.

[attr="class","nilett"] The Fae
[break][attr="class","nico"] The fae are wily and changeable, a paradoxical combination of passionate and apathetic. Since they cannot lie, they have become particularly tricky to compensate, and will take advantage of literal interpretations and double meanings wherever they can. They can seem anywhere from proud to narcissistic, and are rarely sincere or affectionate by human standards. However, they are also extremely eloquent and grandiose, and the displays of affection or emotion that they do make will be dramatic and often impulsive, due to their capricious nature.
[break][break][attr="class","nilettl"] Appearance
[break][attr="class","nico"] The fae are all incredibly beautiful by human standards, though they all have somewhat more “feminine” characteristics from a mortal perspective. They tend to be slightly taller than humans, very slender and willowy, with catlike eyes, long lashes, and narrow, pointed ears. They have very angular bone structure and high cheekbones, and little body fat or muscle; the women tend to have flatter chests and hips, and the men have lean, elegant builds. [break]
While all of the fae share these characteristics, along with non-human characteristics such as horns, fangs, and tails (or scales and gills for the Undersea fae), there are slight differences between the Courts. [break]
North Court: Thick hair and thin lashes, mouths made for stoicism, steady hands, bodies like ice sculptures, eyes that look transparent in the sun. [break]
South Court: Soft limbs, a slight golden glow, sun-kissed skin, full lips, upturned noses, dimples for faking smiles.[break]
East Court: Blindingly white teeth, eyes that seem uncertain of their hue, vibrant colors, sharp edges, dazzling and difficult to focus on, hair with a constant shine.[break]
West Court: Eyelids always on the brink of closing, hesitant movements, earth tones, long fingers, curls and waves, never the same twice.[break]
Undersea: Spilled paint, sleek and gleaming, dark hair, silk, luminescence, long limbs, pupils always dilated.[break]
High Court: Forever in flux with the land, cruelly beautiful, precious metals and jewel tones, limbs like roots, constantly wind-stirred.[break]

[break][break]
[attr="class","nilett"] Aging
[break][attr="class","nico"] The fae do not die of old age, and they are resistant to human illnesses. They age at roughly the same rate as humans until ages of 18 to 21, during which time their aging slows rapidly. They will age at a rate of roughly one ‘human’ year every 25 years until they appear to be in their forties, at which point they essentially stop aging.
[break][break][attr="class","nilettl"] Weaknesses
[break][attr="class","nico"] As previously stated, the fae cannot lie. Another well-known weakness is the ability to control a fae by use of their true name; these "true names" are not given, but known only to the fae themselves, and can be used to control them by anyone who learns the name. The key to this control is that words have weight-- so the command must use their true name and will be followed to the letter. Using them, therefore, takes some planning, especially given the wiliness of the fae and how much they hate to be controlled. Also, they are burned by iron; for the first few seconds of contact, it will induce only extreme heat at the point of contact, but after that it creates real burns. Certain herbs are dangerous to the fae: they cannot approach St. John’s Wort or yarrow closer than seven steps, and rowan berries can be worn to provide immunity to their enchantments. Also, salt can be used to remove enchantments. The fae can die of injury and poison in the same way as humans.
[break][break][attr="class","nilett"] Marriage
[break][attr="class","nico"] "...Is what bwings us together today." No, not really—the fae rarely marry, since marriage is seen as a deal or bargain, which they are bound to by nature. When they do marry, fidelity is not highly prized or expected, but there is no concept of divorce in the Faewild. Marriage connects the natures of the pair involved; this can include a sharing of magical power or specialties, as well as a more attuned sense for the other's thoughts and feelings.

[attr="class","nilett"] The Categories
[break][attr="class","nico"] The magic of which the fae are capable falls into three broad categories: Enchantment, Glamours, and Wards. [break]
Enchantment: Enchanting objects. The effects of the magic are tied to the object and will often extend to its user. [break]
Glamours: The most classic form is a sort of “mind control” exerted over mortals. However, this can also involve the creation of illusions. [break]
Wards: ‘Walls’ or ‘barriers’ of magic that protect a person, place, or thing from magic. [break]
All fae are capable of all types of magic, to some extent. However, the different Courts have different strengths, and each Court will be stronger during its given season.

[attr="class","nilettl"] Seelie Courts
[break][attr="class","nico"] The North Court is cold and stone and the stillness of the dead, as stoic and stable as the fae ever are. Their magic is resilient but not flashy, less alluring than that of the other courts but more reliable, and dangerous in its slowness—often, by the time its effects are noticed, it is too late. [break] [break]
The South Court is endless midnight sun and the sticky sweetness of honey, cloying wildflowers and claustrophobic friendliness. Their magic is open and unhidden, generally what it appears to be at face value, but it can turn out to be too much of a good thing.

[break][break]
[attr="class","nilett"] Unseelie Courts
[break][attr="class","nico"] The East Court is bright lights and vibrant colors, a world of beginnings and deceitful poetry. Its magic is tricks and illusions, blinding with glitter and dazzle; nothing here is ever as it seems, and the more you say, the more you lose. [break] [break]
The West Court is warnings and waning, the end of things and a constant point of transition. Its magic is the kind found in liminal spaces, in change, in anticipation of grief; it will take one thing and make it another, whether the thing is an object, a state of being, or merely one’s expectations.

[attr="class","nilettl"] The High Court & The Undersea
[break][attr="class","nico"] The Undersea is destruction and mystery, the kind of danger that allures; the ocean is home to the strangest of monsters, but curiosity drives us to return and return again. Its magic is the magic of the unknown, of breaking down the old, of a peril that is so alluring that it’s impossible to resist. [break] [break]

Their magic is the magic of potential.

[attr="class","nilett"] The High Court
[break][attr="class","nico"] As previously noted, Faerie is ruled by the High Court through the person of the High King or Queen—sometimes both. However, this is only to the extent that Faerie can be ruled; it is a land as wild and changeable as its residents, and the whims of both the citizens and the crown can change in an instant. [break]
The High King and/or Queen has/have a set of advisors, typically 3-7; while they do, in fact, advise on matters of state, some or all of them are typically also the ruler’s lovers. (However, the ruler will generally also have a number of concubines, mistresses, or paramours who serve no role in government.)

[attr="class","nilettl"] Representation
[break][attr="class","nico"] Each of the cardinal courts has an emissary, who will attend specific conferences and events at the High Court, but they don't live there or serve there regularly. As for the Undersea fae, they have their own monarch, in addition to an ambassador who serves in the same capacity as the cardinal emissaries. If needed, the primary ambassador will be accompanied by a small delegation of lesser dignitaries.
[break][break]
[attr="class","nilett"]War and Succession
[break][attr="class","nico"] The High Court also has generals, but there is very little military organization past that point, since fae warfare is very different from the way that mortals make war. Much of it is done behind the scenes, with power trading hands through close combat and individual violence, if any at all. It tends to be a standalone instance with some ulterior motive for two full armies to face off in battle. [break][break]
When the High King or Queen dies or is otherwise ousted, the position goes to the oldest blood-related heir, regardless of gender. If there is no heir, then the position goes to the conqueror. If the reigning monarch marries, they can choose to have either a king or queen consort, whose power is extremely limited, or a co-ruler. In the case of two married rulers, if one is ousted or killed, the other remains in power. If there is a question about the legitimacy of a claim to the throne, the Blackthorn Throne itself will choose—but if someone tries to sit on it who is not the blood heir or ultimate conqueror, they will be killed by the throne's branches. [break][break]
Succession for the Cardinal Courts is somewhat less strictly governed and involves no murderous furniture, but otherwise proceeds essentially the same way. [break][break]
The Undersea is ruled by a queen, and she has supreme authority over her successor. If she chooses to resign and names one of her daughters as queen, she can take the position back at any time. However, if she is killed—for this is the only way to remove her from her throne otherwise—her conqueror and her heir have equally legitimate claims to the throne, as long as the conqueror is female. In this case, the conqueror and the heir will battle in a highly ceremonial duel to the death. The loser's body is not buried, and instead is abandoned to be eaten by the monsters of the deep.

[attr="class","nilett"] The Seven Schools
[break][attr="class","nico"] The fae are not a particularly scholarly people, so the goal of the Academy is mainly to teach skills rather than information. Due to this, Iris is separated into seven schools, each with a particular focus, each traditionally serving thirteen students of each gender (26 per school, 182 total). Students at Iris study for a minimum four years, typically ages 13-17, with an optional fifth year to perform research or other hands-on practice. [break][break]
School of Magic: This school teaches students to hone their skills with enchantments, wards, and glamours. [break][break]
School of Tailoring: This school trains the makers of clothes, as well as those involved in all aspects of beauty—braiding and adorning hair, decorating faces and bodies with pigments and powders, and the like. [break][break]
School of Craftsmanship: This school teaches students to craft the necessities of their world, magical and otherwise—carpentry, stonework, architecture, and similar trades. [break][break]
School of Forging: This is the third school of the craftsmanship triad, the school that trains makers of jewelry and weapons. [break][break]
School of Herbalism: The study of magical plants and their purposes and dangers. (Mostly poisons). [break][break]
School of War: This school trains its students in combat, as well as tactics and strategy. [break][break]
School of Theory: These are the rare academics among the fae, those who study philosophy and the truths and history of their world. [break]

[attr="class","nilettl"] The School and Lawns
[break][attr="class","nico"] The Iris Academy, located within the boundaries of the High Court, is the main place of learning for young fae. It appears rather like a cluster of ruined castles—though, “ruined” here refers to a perfectly weathered appearance similar to that of a purposefully styled messy bun. [break]
Most walls are open, absent, or at least featuring large windows, through which ivy and vines creep and sunlight illuminates the halls. The walls and floors are heavily decorated with moss, indoors and out, and there is an excess of stone statues and sculptures—all whole and pristine, despite the condition of the building itself. The sprawling grounds and sparring fields resemble meadows more than anything; the grasses are intermixed with groundcover and sprays of small wildflowers.

[attr="class","nilett"] The Dormitories
[break][attr="class","nico"] Iris does have dormitories, in which the majority of the students live; some children of the nobility, however, prefer to stay with their families if they live nearby. Each school has its own building where classes are held, and the dormitories are on the top floor of these buildings, sometimes tucked away in towers. The dormitories for each school are differently decorated according to their craft, but they are all lush and lavish.

[attr="class","nilett"] The High Court
[break][attr="class","nico"] The High Court embodies the values of all of faerie. These values are wisdom, power, cleverness, respecting elders, and trickery. The fae cannot lie but they are a duplicitous people. Additionally, the fae have no sense of gender, modesty, or monogamy. They certainly do not have mortal ideas on these things. Rather, the fae concern themselves with individualism more than social groups. That said, the four cardinal courts do have distinguishable values that may differ in some ways. But all faeries consider the above values very important, the High Court most of all.
[break][break][attr="class","nilettl"] The Cardinal Courts
[break][attr="class","nico"]
The North Court: Values strength, resilience, endurance, elegance, and manner. They tend to be overly formal and have a social ritual for nearly every situation. They are reticent in conversation and oversharing is seen as deeply rude as well as foolish. They are just as prone to melodrama as the rest of the fae, but their excess tends to be of a melancholy flavor that takes itself very seriously. [break][break]
The South Court: Values friendliness, niceties, mincing words, politeness, and comfort. To have anything other than a positive demeanor or to be anything close to harsh is a serious faux pas. It is practically a heritage tradition to lie through a smile, and conversation overflows with pet names (often disingenuous). [break][break]
The East Court: Values beauty, spectacle, novelty, humor, and vibrance. To be ugly is the worst fear of an Eastern fae; they drip with glitter, color, and embellishments, and the most outlandish fashions are the most admired. All of the fae are changeable in nature, but the East Court fae are the most easily bored, and it is considered extremely rude to drone on in senseless small talk. The most socially successful in this Court are those with a skill for tricks, pranks, and illusions. [break][break]
The West Court: Values change, gray areas, caution, and warnings. While some are most comfortable in defined, black-and-white concepts, the fae of the West Court are drawn to nuance like moths to flame. They find it extremely irresponsible and unimpressive to see or discuss the world in terms of binaries. Also, it is social courtesy to warn others of potential harm, and to not make a fae aware of some danger they may be in is extremely rude. They tend to discuss things in very temporary terms—not as they are, but as they are right now.

[attr="class","nilett"] General Information
[break][attr="class","nico"] Half-fae are the result of a coupling between one fae parent and one mortal parent—a relatively rare occurrence in the Faewild. While it is not entirely uncommon for the fae to seduce and have children with mortals, it is very rare for these children to find their way to Faerie. Most half-fae who do live in the Faewild are the children of changeling mortals, brought in to work as servants or support fae bloodlines. As such, they are viewed by the majority of the fae as oddities and best and lower-class citizens at worst.
[break][break][attr="class","nilettl"] Appearance and Aging
[break][attr="class","nico"] Half-fae have a more similar lifespan to humans, living 200 years at absolute maximum. Their apparent aging will stop at a slightly later point; half-fae can develop lined faces and gray-threaded hair that are foreign to the fae. They will present with some mix of fae and mortal traits, the specifics of which vary—some half-fae have rounded ears but lighter builds, where others may have pointed ears but more solid, earthly features. One consistency in their appearances is that they generally lack the non-human traits of the full fae—tails, horns, scales, gills for the Undersea, et cetera.
[break][break]
[attr="class","nilett"] Abilities and Weaknesses
[break][attr="class","nico"] The weaknesses and abilities of half-fae are, as one might expect, mixed. Like full-blooded fae, they cannot lie. However, they are immune to iron burns and the herbs that ward off full-blooded fae. Due to their mortal half, they are susceptible to control by glamours and enchanted food, such as faerie fruit, though it is slightly more difficult than it would be with a full-blooded mortal. The other side of this is that half-fae have generally weaker magical abilities, and magic does not come as naturally to them.

[attr="class","nilett"] General Information
[break][attr="class","nico"] The term “changeling” technically refers to two different things, since a changeling is the result of a human child and a fae child being swapped. Both the human child raised by the fae, and the fae child raised by mortals, are considered changelings.
[break][break][attr="class","nilettl"] The Fae Child
[break][attr="class","nico"] For the fae child, the outward expressions of their heritage tend to be muted or suppressed when they’re raised in the mortal world; this tends to stunt the growth of such things as horns and claws, while other odd features—pointed ears, catlike eyes, et cetera—will be subtle enough to be brushed off as oddities. The fae traits in their nature and personality, however, are not as easily hidden or ignored.
[break][break]
[attr="class","nilett"] The Mortal Child
[break][attr="class","nico"] The mortal children are generally taken either for use as servants, or in order to support the bloodlines of the fae, who are not very fertile. Fae children will often be swapped out if they are seen as deformed or otherwise defective, largely for this reason. However, the reasonings for making this switch can be weak and seemingly trivial, given that the fae will seek any excuse to cause mischief.

Mortals, of course, age as we are accustomed to—but only while in the mortal world. If a mortal lives in Faerie, they will age at the same rate as the fae. However, if they ever return to the mortal world, this aging will catch up with them; depending on the length of their time in the Faewild, humans in the flower of youth have returned to the mortal world, only to turn decrepit and crumble into dust. Mortals can, of course, lie, which is why they are often kept as servants by the fae and used as spies. They are seen as lower-class citizens in Faerie, however, and are unable to do magic unless a fae bargain affords them the ability. They can also be controlled if they give away their names, similar to the way that true names can be used to control the fae.

[attr="class","nilett"] General Information
[break][attr="class","nico"] Nymphs are bound to one natural object, such as a tree, lake, stream, boulder, etc. This is their first (and often only) love. Nymphs are born when one of these natural objects lacks a guardian, making them "children of the land" in a more organic way than other fae. They live in or around their object and have a bond wherein they are able to feel its feelings, including pain. Nymphs are bound to the object they were born to protect, but that bond can be broken. If that bond is broken, then it is nearly impossible for them to re-bind to something, unless it is in some way a relative of their object.
[break][break][attr="class","nilettl"] Relations with the Fae
[break][attr="class","nico"] Nymphs are inherently flighty creatures, not built for normal attachments as the fae see them. While they can and sometimes do have children with fae or mortals, they rarely stay in those relationships long. Nymphs cannot have children with each other, only with fae or mortals.
[break][break]
[attr="class","nilett"] Bound Objects
[break][attr="class","nico"] Nymphs' appearances can be influenced by their bound item. For example, a nymph bound to a plant might have more green coloring. Their weaknesses are also tied to the bound object; if the object is damaged, the nymph is hurt, and if the bond is broken, it damages the nymph's vitality. They will grow weak and sickly and their magic will become less potent.
