Childhood | Teenage Years | Adulthood |
Parents: Aria and Lucius Northbow (~200) Grandparents: Rowena and Oriel Northbow (deceased) Dorian was born into a comfortable position among the East Court nobility; the Northbow family was an old one, old enough that their lineage had slowly shrunk to one branch with a single heir—that being Dorian. While their responsibilities were considerably fewer than those of a truly royal family, they still proved too much for his parents, who began a life of aimless travel shortly after Dorian was born. He was left to be raised by his grandparents, in a mostly empty manor, among near-endless shelves of books on spells and history. The inconsistent, infrequent visits from his parents were unfair in the way that dangling a treat in front of a dog is unfair, but Dorian always told himself, later in life, that the opportunity to teach himself had been worth it. | School was where Dorian truly thrived. He became a pet to some instructors and a pest to others with his constant questions and the fact that he practically lived in their offices. This was the period of his life where he became fixated on the mortal world; after beginning to learn about it, about its differences and customs, he developed a fascination with it. He went so far as to dream of being a changeling and being able to experience the mortal world, perhaps even with caring and present parents. He grew particularly close with the History instructor at the time, Erven Aureate, who mentored him and eventually encouraged Dorian himself to pursue teaching. | By the time he'd graduated, thanks to his mentor, Dorian was certain of what he wanted to do. He would become an instructor, and teach the next generator to make sense of their world, with its excess of beauty and violence. At the same time, he aimed to protect and uphold his family's home and make sure their legacy wasn't destroyed. His grandparents, however, aged as the fae are wont to do—slowly, but still. Though they looked no older than forty, there was only so long that one could keep up with the dance of the faewild. First, his grandmother grew ill and died. Then his grandfather was the sole proprietor of the home, leaving Dorian's parents next in line. Ownership of things like this worked much the same way as succession in Faerie—the only person who could contest the blood heir was a conqueror. So, it was when Dorian was barely out of school that his grandfather commanded: in order to keep his parents from inheriting the house, Dorian had to kill him. His philosophy failed to assuage Dorian's conscience. Not even when he exerted his claim over the house, when he rescued it from his absent and uncaring parents, could he entirely convince himself that it was worth it. That didn't mean that he did not try. |

writing sample
The pavilion was filling, along with the fountains, the goblets, and the eyes of the fae present. Gemini watched the Undersea delegation over the rim of his goblet, his gaze trailing lazily over them—some overly pale, some green- or blue-hued, all serpentine and gleaming. Most of them were slick and smooth-edged, reflective like oil, but one of the princesses stood apart from the rest. She seemed cut with some sharper tool than her family and peers, he thought. That would be a matter worth investigating—but later.
"Are we meant to talk to them?" The small voice that had arisen at his side belonged to Ophelia Eurydice, the youngest of Alaric's claimed children at only seven. Gemini happened to know that Caelia Foxglove, a serving girl to one of the East Court dignitaries, had a son by him who was barely more than an infant, but no one was meant to be aware of the child's existence.
Despite being related by full blood to Ambrose, Ophelia preferred Gemini over the rest of her siblings, for reasons he had never understood. She was repeatedly discouraged from associating with her disgraced half-brother, but it never seemed to stop her. Now, he felt the shy slip of her hand into his, hers small and soft, his heavy with rings. "You and Ambrose certainly ought to," he mused, the corner of his mouth lifting in a smirk. If the High King chose to ignore the responsibility of Gemini's existence, then Gemini himself would take any chance to do the same.
