welcome to Midsummer
Welcome to the wilds of Faerie, where deception and intrigue wind through the courts of the fae. Revels overflow with excess, beauty, and betrayal, while the students of the Iris Academy learn to take their place in a world where nothing is ever as it seems. Now, as a blue moon rises, the reigning High Court prepares to make peace with the Undersea, but peace is not something that rises easily from the ashes. Beware wandering into a faerie circle, mortals, and never strike a bargain with the fae; they may not be able to lie, but they are always hiding something.
Midsummer is a character-driven, fae folklore, text-based RPG site, founded 3 September 2023 by admins SeaJem + M. We are a collective of writers from a variety of backgrounds and histories, and we value community, character development, and sharing a love of writing. Feel free to look around and explore—but don’t go too far, or it may be hard to leave.

Site Lore
The Faewild is comprised of four Cardinal Courts, plus the ruling High Court and the Undersea. The Seelie Courts, North and South, are slightly more traditional and straightforward (as much as the fae ever are), which their Unseelie counterparts to the East and West are duplicitous and wild.
Farthest south, beneath the waves, lies the Undersea, home to the pearl-encrusted Sunken City. The Undersea fae are a proud people—perhaps too much so, according to some of their counterparts on dry land. All of the Faewild is ruled by the High Court, whose power is personified in the High King and Queen. By wearing this crown, they take on the spirit of the Faewild; their hearts beat with the heart of the land. Beware, and choose your words carefully: the fae are a capricious and tricky people, as fickle as they are cunning, and their rulers are the most of all.

Nikolai felt a wave of relief wash over him as she accepted the beverage. He still didn’t trust himself not to drink in an environment like this, even having stayed away from it for months now. “Of course,” He looked over to the Enigma Prince, still engaged in conversation with Talia. His jaw twitched at the sight. Was he really getting jealous over this? It was nothing more than polite conversation, Talia trying to climb up the ladder of noble society that he had thrust on her. It was nothing. It had to be. “Your cousin?” He cocked a brow in curiosity. “You must be an Enigma then.” It was a slight surprise. The girl lacked the signature dark hair and ivory complexion of the Enigmas. She was more gilded, like he was. Oh dear. If this was another one of his father’s bastards he didn’t know if he could take it. “You have a deer? How curious. I do hope you find it.” he asked, grateful to be the one asking the questions, and not the one having to answer them. If she asked him for his identity, that is, if she did not already know it, would he even be able to deflect? ★ faiIf no one else will save me, I must save myself.

[attr="class","box1a"] The mortal queen wanted to know who she had the honor of meeting. No one, Amaris thought. She could give no answer to that. She thought of what she'd snarled at the knight when he cornered her. Honor is a reward doled out by kings to their best little soldiers so they don't have to spare the expense of real prizes. Amaris would rather be spared the platitudes. She'd rather that meeting her be worth something. You have no honor at all, she wanted to say; you are a thief and a tyrant. You stole my kill just to become what he was. She hungered to say it. But she would hold her tongue if it meant saving her skin. Survival was the flame she stoked, through cycles of the moon, through loss of allies and accumulation of enemies. For what she was surviving, some dark days, she had to wonder. But even then she knew the answer; she would die before she would give up on seeing Faerie changed, Faerie freed. The wilderness of its people was a thing no mortal could understand, certainly not stamped out by generations of Gentry as it was now. She would make them remember. Maybe one day she'd break the curse they gave her and once again join Wolfsbane in the fight. "Amaris Silvershade," she ground out, "Your Majesty." Her eyes were blue fire. She had no honor to give. Tonight was the night. She’d been dreading this party for so long, for the mere uncertainty of what exactly would take place between the Undersea and the Land. The atmosphere of the place would have been perfect, what with the glittering lights, the gurgle of fountains, the beauty of the Folk, but as with all gatherings of the gentry, it was never only for enjoyment. Tonight was the night to make reparations to the Undersea for faults of the East Court’s heir, under the guise of being a way for the High and Undersea Courts to treatise for the first time since Alaric had been killed. It’s all so convoluted, Cassie thought as she raised a glass of something pink and bubbly to her lips. She had arrived with Jin-hwa and her sister, Hai, though her friend had directed them both to the gazebo they now sat in before anyone could make much of a fuss about their arrival. Cassie sat at her friend's right hand, looking up at the girl who’d stopped in front of them. She was of the North, that was clear, but her face was unfamiliar. Calanthe, Jin-hwa called her. She watched her best friend probe the newcomer, ready to intervene should she try to start something. Too late. Jin-hwa would not have even acknowledged her had she not wanted to start something. Cassie took another sip, cutting a sideways glance at her friend. She set the glass down. “A friend of yours?” She asked Jin-hwa in a low tone. To the girl, she gave a dazzling smile. “I don’t believe we’ve met.” She gestured to the seat next to her. “Please, join us.” ★ faiI can't help it if I look like an angel.

“Of course your majesty.”
Yet another bow. He backed away into the crowd that carved itself into a circle as though falling away into an abyss centered about the aura of Kaimana Mei and her entourage, who, even so, gave her a smaller yet similar breadth. Pulling a drink the queen had showed a fondness for on several occasionsfrom the tray of a passing banquet server without so much as looking at him, or even alerting the server to his presence, Vĩnh returned to the throne created by Kaimana’s presence, as though drawn inwards by a string.
He bowed, yet again, allowing her to take the proffered glass from his hands as though she was picking it up from an inanimate table. Those who saw them in that moment would have the impression of the very same. Vĩnhs presence, and indeed those of the queen’s other servants were subsumed by hers, any figure before her seeming to blend with the ground she deigned to tread upon. Despite this, Vĩnh had chosen to add another layer of cover, the drink, to what it was he had truly brought her.
“Your majesty, It may be of interest to you that the faerie who intruded upon the blue moon revel and was subsequently taken into custody has approached, and is now conversing with Guinevere marcel. Her heir has retreated from the festivities, likely due to the actions of Princess Jin-Hwa Mei, who is beneath the gazebo thisaways with Princess Hai Mei, Cassandra enigma, and a north court girl. She seems to be making some small attempt to spite you, A most unwise decision, for which I must take some blame as her servant during her time here. Should you wish her to behave in a more becoming manner, the matter could be forced by way of blood.”
Only by the law of the undersea would the queens servant suggest she draw blood from her daughter. Such was their way.
“There is an unbound mortal here as well, for what purpose I cannot imagine. It has retreated into the flora for the time being.”
Though Vĩnh had gathered this information in a matter of seconds, the body heat of the attendant parties painting a thermic watercolor into the moisture in the air that he read with his skin, the mortal in particular had just retreated out of immediate range.

[attr="class","box1"] The girl speaking to him was awaiting Guinivere's audience. Something in Gemini seethed at being second choice to the High Queen, but that was his role, wasn't it? That was the place of an heir. It was, in all technicality, where he'd wanted to stand for most of his life, but only as a step upwards to the throne itself. Still, his niceties, though well-polished, could always benefit from more practice. He turned a slight and genial smile on the girl, observing that this conversation would require a gentle touch. Colorful though she was on the surface, she was soft-spoken, her words delicate with intention. Her choices of manner were unsure, almost quaint. This would hardly tax his faculties. He'd seen this girl with Princess Mei's former lover, he thought; in fact, when he located her face in his memory, he realized that she'd been at the party he attended some months ago. He'd see her go under. She was a fellow victim of Jin-hwa Mei. Gemini could empathize. He tore his eyes from the selkine figure of the Undersea princess, shimmering in the crowd, and smoothed down the fire that surged in him at the sight of her. He needed to focus on the girl before him. She could be as crucial in his rise to power as any other unknown. "I certainly hope it shall be," he said in response to her opening remark, a slight glitter of amusement sparking in his eyes. He bent to kiss her hand. "But you are correct in that I haven't yet made your acquaintance. What is your name? I'd be fain to address you by too low a rank." He straightened up with a slight wince that wasn't entirely manufactured, the movement stretching the taut, tender skin over his forming scars. "Forgive me. You may or may not have heard tell of my recent exploits, but they've left me less than sprightly." Again the slight amusement, a soft brush of humor. The pain had yet to recede, but it was nothing next to the burn of its original infliction. As far as parties went, this was one Kallias could get behind. Still overflowing with people with motives of their own hidden behind facades, but at least it had a good air about it. Honestly, the whole affair had been decorated rather well. The flowers were a nice touch. He somewhat was enjoying himself, even if his parents had practically shoved him out the door. It will look good to the other nobles if we go, they had said. Was it true? Yes. Did that make him care any more about this sort of thing? No. But he had refused a number of their parties, so he felt bad enough to agree to this one. He lounged off to the side, sitting in a dainty garden chair, sipping at tea of his own. The saving grace of these sort of events, honestly. Food and drink. He sighed, running a hand through his hair, ruffling the loose waves of his hair. A pert of him wished for it to be over, and another part was enjoying it. Somehow. He had seen Cassie earlier. He saw her now. He was merely keeping track of where everyone was. Nothing more. He definitely had not looked for her when he arrived. That would be absurd. She was with three other girls, one of which gave off a vague air of menace. Either way, Cassie was with her friends. Best not to disturb her. He did decide he would greet her at some point, of course. ------------- Mentioned: Jin-Hwa Mei , Cassie Eloise Enigma Notes: Outfit (top few buttons unbuttoned)

[break] Jin-Hwa turned to look at Cassie, almost fluttering her eyelashes in her in a false attempt at sweetness. Cassie was the only one to speak to her now, and after all the words they had traded. They were so different, and she loved her desperately, and she would never admit it. She held her court, and Hai and Cassie were to her sides, and her eyes were on her mother. If Kaimana saw them as weaknesses, even for a moment, they would be threatened. Her sisters trusted her. Cassie trusted her. Hai trusted her. They should not have. [break][break] “Are we friends?” she asked Cassie, every word baited and overly sweet. Stay out of my way. Cassie had not. She was here now, and there were things she was not telling Jin-Hwa. [break][break] That was fine. She would ferret them out. She didn’t know what they were, and she didn’t know why, but her words had rung true, every last one. She would be more awful than them. She would find out. [break][break] “This is Calanthe Willowlace. Heir to the duchy of the North. I have to say, I know so little about the duchies.” Her voice kept that same tone, that sweetness that was the precursor to something worse, the smile right before a bite. “ Except that I do not care for the unseelie.” The West Court girl and the Eastern boy. She did not want to think about them. She could see Gemini out of the corner of her eye. [break][break] It was the same artisan, the one she had almost drowned, whole and hale and standing next to the heir of the throne like either of them deserved to be here. Her lip curled. “Speaking of friends, Cassie.” She said, her words falling like blows. “Isn’t that one of yours, unseelie and all?” The Eastern ambassador had been trading looks with Cassie for the past few minutes. “Or is it the artisan with your Crowned Prince?” She tilted her head and her eyes flashed. Cassie had never mentioned where she had heard of Jin-Hwa’s actions in the East, at least not that Jin-Hwa recalled. And she forgot nothing. “Shall Hai fetch her?” [break][break] She tilted her head even more and leaned forward, bringing the teacup to her lips like she was sharing some secret. “If you don’t tell me the truth about Nikolai’s little pet ambassador,” she said quietly. “I will reach my hand down her pretty throat and rip her heart out, and you and Nikolai and all the rest can watch. My mother will applaud me.”
[break][break] No one could hear her but Cassie, but they didn’t need to. They would see Hai moving and they would hear the screams . “I bet I will get her mortal blood on your dress and not mine.” She added, setting back down her cup. “What do you think?”
[break][break] The question was a threat and she said it almost like she was joking. She wanted to see what Cassie would do. She wanted to see what Nikolai would do. She wanted to see him squirm. Most of all, though, she wanted to make Gemini look at her. She wanted him to know how awful she could be. Cassie restrained a much-desired eye roll. So Jin-hwa was going to go down this route, because what other option did the Princess have? It was lucky she hadn’t tried to sink her claws into one of the other girls. They would not have made it out alive. She matched Jin-hwa’s poisonous smile, with her own, Court imposed one. Are we friends? She heard the meaning in her friend’s words. Cassie was intervening, stepping in her way. Jin-hwa was not pleased. “We are much more than friends.” I will stand between you and your suicidal goals if it kills me. She ignored the Northern girl. There would be time for an apology later. Jin-hwa would go on a rampage tonight, and the only one who was safe from her wrath was Cassie. Jin-hwa could try to maim her with her poisoned tongue, but she’d been trying (and failing) for ages. Kallias had shown up in her peripheral vision, just as the Princess mentioned her distaste for the Unseelie. She dearly hoped he had the sense to stay away from the gazebo. Every ounce of her courtly trainings flowed back into her mind. She knew how to deal with snakes, and Jin-hwa was her most beloved kind. “My Crown Prince?” she laughed loudly, sarcastic and dry. If she and Kallias had been exchanging glances, her and Gemini had been practically revolving around each other all night. “Fetch the ambassador. Leave the girl alone. You’ve done quite enough to her for one lifetime. I will tell you whatever you want to know so long as you leave her be.” There was a hint of a smile on her face, but the sound of her voice was not to be ignored. Jin-hwa thought her inferior, she knew it. But she had not gone through all the turmoil and pain of being who she was just to let imposed inferiority get to her. Would her friend accept the offer? All fae deals ended in bloodshed and pain, regardless of how well one negotiated. She was positive she could protect Kallias. She was not sure how much more she could protect Talia. Art requires us to be flexible. Art requires us to be present. For a moment she was away from this party, in a sunlight studio, seeing scarlet drops on crimson petals. She was flexible and she was present. Cassie had seen enough of the artisan’s blood. Any traces of friendliness dropped from her face. “She is innocent, Jin-hwa. You will not harm her. Take the Golden Boy. Destroy him. Do not make her pay for his sins.” She raised her glass to her lips, her gaze never leaving her friend’s. The glass clinked back onto the table in front of them. “I think you are vying too much for your mother’s approval. I was like that once. And look what happened to me.” No one was ever around to discipline the royal children, they let them run amok and shatter glasses, and let the others get stabbed with those shards. Cassie had been complacent in Jin-hwa’s schemes before, telling her off but never really meaning it. This time though, she meant it. ★ faiI can't help it if I look like an angel.

Hai remained silent as the other girl, Cassie, spoke to both her sister and Calanthe. Hai felt incredibly out of place. Among her sisters friends, breathing the air of the land. She was out of her depth. She'd always felt more at home in the water. So she remained silent. Cassie seemed kind. Far more kind than Jin-hwa, which made Hai wonder how they were friends. She watched as Jin-hwa spoke to Cassie. Hai's fingers tightened their grip in her lap, slightly twisting her skirt in her fingers. The way Jin-hwa was speaking unsettled her. Jin-hwa was prodding Cassie. No, some of these words could be taken as threat. She glanced at the Unseelie man that was apparently Cassie's friend. He probably shouldn't get involved, for his own sake. Hai tensed at the mention of her name. Shall I have Hai fetch her? No, no. Hai very much wanted to stay out of this. Were they friends? Hai did not have many, but even she knew that friends did not threaten friends. The scary thing was, Jin-hwa was probably right about their mother applauding her for that. It was something Kaimana would do, of that Hai was sure. She stayed silent, watching. She wasn't sure what to do besides observe. ------------- Tagged: Jin-Hwa Mei Calanthe Willowlace Cassie Eloise Enigma Kallias Greyson Notes: dress, shoes, nails, hair

[break] Jin-Hwa laughed. It was not quite cruel. It was not kind. "Oh, Cassandra. My mother's favor is a fragile little thing. I am vying for the fear of the high court. Do you think I'm succeeding, Hai?"
[break][break] Her smile was sharp and arching. "And I do see where you are. Disinherited. Clawing for scraps of approval. Isn't it charming?" [break][break] She was not even being purposefully cruel anymore. She simply did not know how to feel anything but disgrace when she looked at Cassie. She was everything Jin-Hwa could never be. She was everything Jin-Hwa's mother would never allow her to be. [break][break] When she was small, she had thought her mother beat her because she had made a mistake. But she realized, soon, that it was because she apologized. She should have spat in her mother's face and said ' yes, I hit him, and what will you do?' She did not vie for her mother's favor anymore. She committed atrocities and laughed. [break][break] "Get the ambassador, Hai," she decides. "Leave the artisan alone. I like Cassie's idea, though. Destroying the golden prince, was it? I think you should. I'll let you, just this once."[break][break] She smiled graciously. It was not a gift at all. She was letting Cassie rebuke her. [break][break] That wasn't a gift either. Hai blinked. An order. Oh. Well... what was she meant to do? Not listen to her sister? It would be best to just do it and get it over with. As much as she dreaded bringing anyone else into this, that ambassador would be one way or another. Whether Hai got him or not. If Hai got him, it would be far better than if Jin-Hwa did. She stood, brushing her skirts off with the palms of her hands, straightening them, before walking out of the gazebo and to where the ambassador boy was lounging. One foot after another, just get this over with. All too quickly, she was face to face with the ambassador. She held her hands behind her back, forcing herself to not fidget with him. Her mother's voice rang in her ears. "Hello, Ambassador. My sister, Princess Jin-Hwa, asked me to fetch you. She wishes to speak to you." Kallias watched the other partygoers, idly fiddling with his now-empty teacup. He recognized a few people from the few of his parent's parties he had attended, but many were still unfamiliar. He didn't bother leaving his spot, content with simply enjoying the fresh air and flowers surrounding him. Until he was broken from his reverie by movement out of the corner of his eye. He had definitely not been keeping an eye on Cassie, no. He had definitely not been a bit worried for her with that menacing princess with her. No. Why would he? A younger girl was approaching him. He didn't recognize her, but she seemed oddly familiar. Then the girl was standing before him, tense. She wishes to speak to you. That menacing princess wanted to speak to him? Wonderful. He stood, sighing softly. "Lead the way."He followed the girl to where Cassie was, eyes flicking over Cassie. His eyes then went to the girl who had summoned him. ------------- Mentioned: Jin-Hwa Mei , Cassie Eloise Enigma Notes: Outfit (top few buttons unbuttoned)

[break] Jin-Hwa stretched, a snake about to strike. It was a practiced pose. Letting her skirt hang around her, letting the pearls click together, letting her skin shimmer in the light. She wanted to see which he reacted to first. His eyes were on Cassie. She smiled wider. It was the look on the face of a monster that has found its prey, a siren rising above the water. [break][break] "Ambassador." She shifted again. The pearls flashed in the air. She touched the gold collar at her throat. "You are too kind to join us. Sit."[break][break] The points of her teeth were obvious. It was not a question. "Hai, darling, thank you." She said 'darling' like an insult. She did not offer a seat to her sister. [break][break] "You've met my sister, yes?" She was leaning towards him, swirling her glasses almost conspiratorially, forcing him to look at her. "Have you met the princess Enigma? I do realize there are quite a few." The flash of teeth again. She was nearly baiting him, nearly mocking the high court, but not quite. She paused on the precipice. She dared him to jump with her smile.[break][break] "I have to ask how you got the position of Ambassador," she said, eyes sweeping him up and down. "While I am not one to limit the young Duke's, ah, opportunities, you don't seem his type." She raised an eyebrow. "There must be some other impressive qualities you possess, yes?"[break][break] She almost hoped he was Nikolai's lover. She wanted to take something else from him. She was bored. Guinivere nodded, scanning the party. The crowd seemed to whirl like a current, but it was not hard to find Gemini conversing with some artisan decked out in bows. She didn't know what to think. She was still watching that Undersea Princess out of the corner of her eye, btu she hadn't stood or made any move, not once. It made Guinivere more suspicious.
[break][break]
There was a flash of movement. The South Court duke was cheerfully addressing some mortal. Guinivere moved to turn away, but-- wait.
[break][break]
She recognized that mortal. Those eyes. She had thrown knives at him in that tower the night of the blue moon revel. She had nearly killed him. He had been prepared to fight off fae, not mortals.
[break][break]
Why was he here?

He didn't see her looing at him or he didn't care. She looked back at the woman speaking to her, trying to focus, trying to marshal her concentration and diplomacy. Her smile was still flickering. "Silvershade?"she said. "I don't believe I've reheard that name before. Though of course, I don't know all of the gentry yet."
[break][break]
She knew most of them, if not from her time as queen, then her time before. That felt like a distant memory sometimes. She knew it wasn't. If the need came, she would be a killer again without a second thought. Her eyes went back to that mortal. Maybe the need would come sooner than she had thought.

[break][break] A feather might be [break]
a ton of bricks
[break]
Nyra nodded at his question. No one seemed to think she was an Enigma at first glance. She knew she didn't look like her family, but it was her mother's side that was Enigma. [break]
[break] Honestly, she didn't look like either side of her family. She and Calanthe were nothing alike. She and Juno seemed even more different. Maybe that was just the familiarity.[break]
[break]
Nyra found Gemini, talking to some girl. She didn't know her. That didn't mean anything at all. She couldn't seem to find Bran again. Maybe that was who Rhea had gone to find? Rhea knew him, at least a bit. "There he is," she said, gesturing with her glass towards Gemini. "The cousin, not the deer." [break]
[break]
She looked down at her feet. Something was stepping on her toes. Rhea was there, doing figure-eights around her ankles. She laughed and lifted her. [break]
[break]
"This is the deer." Rhea glittered in the sunlight, an amalgamation of silver wires and panels. The etchings on her sides were new. Nyra had recently joined her ears into two parts. Rhea wiggled her nose and Nyra laughed. "Her name is Rhea. She lost her flower crown though." Nyra lifted the flower crown off her head and set in on Rhea. It was too large and she sighed. "Anyway. I'll have to make a new one." [break]
[break] She looked back up at him brightly. "Do you have any pets?" [break]
[break]
Rhea was not a pet, of course. She was a creation. [break]
