welcome to Midsummer
Welcome to the wilds of Faerie, where deception and intrigue wind through the courts of the fae. Revels overflow with excess, beauty, and betrayal, while the students of the Iris Academy learn to take their place in a world where nothing is ever as it seems. Now, as a blue moon rises, the reigning High Court prepares to make peace with the Undersea, but peace is not something that rises easily from the ashes. Beware wandering into a faerie circle, mortals, and never strike a bargain with the fae; they may not be able to lie, but they are always hiding something.
Midsummer is a character-driven, fae folklore, text-based RPG site, founded 3 September 2023 by admins SeaJem + M. Site Lore
The Faewild is comprised of four Cardinal Courts, plus the ruling High Court and the Undersea. The Seelie Courts, North and South, are slightly more traditional and straightforward (as much as the fae ever are), which their Unseelie counterparts to the East and West are duplicitous and wild.
Farthest south, beneath the waves, lies the Undersea, home to the pearl-encrusted Sunken City. The Undersea fae are a proud people—perhaps too much so, according to some of their counterparts on dry land. All of the Faewild is ruled by the High Court, whose power is personified in the High King and Queen. By wearing this crown, they take on the spirit of the Faewild; their hearts beat with the heart of the land. Beware, and choose your words carefully: the fae are a capricious and tricky people, as fickle as they are cunning, and their rulers are the most of all.

[attr="class","box1a"]There was a notable difference between a party and a revel, and this was a party, which Luca supposed was all right but was certainly less fun. The tea was flowing and the flowers were fragrant and the ocean breeze was doing wonders for his hair, making him look particularly majestic, but there wasn't nearly enough opportunity for anybody to take advantage of that fact. Luca scanned the crowd for likely willing participants, of which, this being Faerie, he suspected there were many. He positioned himself near a table laden with refreshments and glittering but mostly unspiked floral punch and clapped his hands, fingers and wrists heavy with pearls and gold. "Hear ye, hear ye!" he chimed. "If you seek some reprieve from the politicking, might I suggest a game?" Luca's eyes sparkled with mischief and sunlight, scrunched at the corners by an unsuppressed grin. "The serious diplomats among you won't be interrupted; I'll see to that," he assured, "but those of us who'd like to make the best of this beautiful day—and even more beautiful company—" He winked to a mossy-haired West Court nymph "—ought to do so! I'll teach the rules to anyone who wants a bit of fun." This was, of course, an irresistible proposition for any true-blooded fae—and otherwise, Luca thought, eyeing the crown prince. [break][break][break] Started with a kiss [break]
Oh we must stop meeting like this
[break][break]
Suki tilted her head back, inhaling and then exhaling once. She couldn't see it, but she knew the fae would be gathering just because her dear cousin wanted them to be. She was sitting with the South Court out of as much necessity as anything. She did not want to participate in anything of any gravity, and this sounded like a fabulous way to avoid it. [break][break]
She knew Adem would be here, somewhere, close, probably behind her. If she had her way, they would end this party much like the last one, but with the ruling monarch alive. She quite liked their dear high queen. Guinivere had entirely ignored her thus far. [break][break]
She turned her head to where she heard a voice, Luca. The glitter on her dress rubbed off on her skin. She did not try to brush it off as she stood. Her heels dug into the earth beneath them. She didn't stumble. [break][break]
"Luca," she drawled, avoiding any and all of his titles. "I'm sure I know. But I'll bite." . Her smirk was as suggestive as it was fleeting. "What are the rules of your brilliant game?" [break][break]

Albert's gaze slanted sideways as Luca started to speak. He never seemed to be up to anything good. Perhaps that was harsh, or even downright hypocritical for Albert, but he couldn't help but be suspicious. They were in a larger game now, from an engagement to an ambassadorship. Then again, this prince was another ambassador. And Albert didn't even have the position. [break][break]
He would be held at the High Court. He would stay there for additional "training" in battle strategies. He knew what this was. The High Queen wanted leverage on Quinn. He hated being used like a pawn. He was also entirely too used to it.
[break][break] He had been a pawn his whole life. And now the board was opened up, and this prince wanted to play a game. He had lost the metaphor. Maybe it wasn't. Maybe this was just a reckless thing to do. He couldn't help himself. He was curious. He turned to Quinn and held out his hand. [break][break]
"Shall we?" He was playing either away. With or without her. [break][break]

As he followed Suki through the glittering cloud of fae, Adem remembered too readily how the last few parties he’d attended had gone. The more recent one had ended in Suki, poisoned with hydrangea, and the one before that had ended in the murder of the High King, which they later found out about after being otherwise preoccupied. It was safe to say he was on edge. He let her lead him wherever she wanted to go, red glitter smudged across her shoulders. She stopped a few paces ahead of him, speaking to a boy with hair like gold threads. Her cousin, Luca. Adem stepped closer, so he was directly behind Suki. He trusted Luca, but only as much as he had to. The boy had no reason to harm Suki, but that never meant anything to the Folk. He listened to Suki’s drawling voice, asking her cousin the rules of the game he’d just announced. From behind her, his hand brushed hers gently, a warning as much as a message that he was there. There with her, and there for her. ★ faiWe would bathe in the fire the others are afraid to touch.

Sutton liked games though she didn't understand the subtle cues that Luca was saying. Sutton was still clueless, some would even say innocent about the intimacy that most of these games may bring. She still had a bright smile on her face because games can bring friendship out of this and that is all that she really wanted. She had been feeling lonely lately and because of that, not that she would even notice or understand, people were using her kindness and her ability to be ignorant on everything.
She looked around and was seeing some familiar faces.Sutton felt out of place, she felt like the child that was always picked last for games because they didn't want to be around her or they knew if she was on the team she would cause them to lose. Funny part, she was great at actual games just not the ones that make her think strategically or she has to be....well seductive.

"I didn't peg you as someone that would be interested in something like this." she said, she looked over at him curiously. She still took his hand, feeling the warmth of his in hers and she was feeling a tingling sensation through her whole body. She tried to ignore it, maybe she was coming down with something? "Do you even like games?" she asked, Quinn wasn't really a fan of games because of her sister. She always lose and sometimes it cost her a hefty price. "This makes me nervous though, I feel like there is some kind of hidden agenda." The last part was more to herself and she made she sure she was quietly talking to him. She grinned as she faced him, "So how close are you to your cousin?" Albert Alder Coult,

[attr="class","box1a"]For so early on in the state of things, this was quite a pleasing turnout. The warm glow of attention greeted Luca like an old friend, and he blossomed under it. Of course there were days when he wondered what he would be like in its absence, but he could only assume that he would be more prone to that kind of wondering, which really just got far too dreary. "My revelers, my kindred spirits," Luca said, his face alight and dazzling now, "Follow me, would you please? We shouldn't like to disturb the politics of the evening." He was all but floating, steps light with mischief, as he led his band of fun-seekers to a clearing deeper in the lush gardens. He felt almost like a piper with an enchanted flute, luring them with glittering promise. Once they had arrived, he spread his hands out forward. "Sit, please, be at your leisure. Though I hardly think the rules will take much time to explain." They were already in a loose circle where they'd sat or reclined, which made things much easier. This particular corner of the garden had a fountain in the center, a stone nymph bent over a pool, seemingly frozen in the act of washing her hair as water ran down from her carved tresses. "It's simple enough," Luca said, standing in front of the fountain, behind the nymph statue. "We'll go round in a circle and sing a chant. Then, once the song is done, whoever stands in front of the nymph's face and whoever stands at her feet will have to kiss." He winked and flashed pearly, baby-perfect teeth. "Make it as chaste or bold as you like. The more the merrier, as they say. And we intend to be very merry indeed." Hai sat down as the boy commanded. She listened to the golden-haired boy speak. It sounded... fun? She didn't really have all that much experience with kissing. She'd never really seen any interest in it. But this game sounded simple enough. She sat with her legs crossed, smoothing her skirts until they had no more wrinkles. She wondered if her siblings were here somewhere. Jin-Hwa, probably. This sort of thing seemed the thing Jin-Hwa would use to her own advantage. Marcellus, not so much. He would see the crowd and turn and run the other way. The thought made her laugh a little inside. As for her other siblings... well, she wasn't close enough to them to truly know if they would do this sort of thing. She herself felt so out of place, among this people who seemed to navigate the air of the place with such ease. She sort of wished she could. She would learn eventually.
She sat quietly, waiting for the game to begin. If she ended up not wanting to do it, well, she could just walk away.

[attr="class","box1"] There had been a fair amount of lovers colliding already at the revel, but this would be easily the most overt. Gemini thought of it—the figures in shadows, laughing into each others' mouths, breathing out long sighs from the mantle of foliage. A clavicle or Adam's apple spattered red, a shoulder rolling back, a hand wandering, pulling at laces. The fae only pretended to hide these things. He knew that if he wanted it badly enough, he could have anyone he liked; he was the crown prince, after all. But this was a better way to get the aimless wanting out of his system while endearing himself to the populace. Well. Was it aimless? In his memories of the lovers in shade or behind branches, he kept substituting a rather particular pair of pinked lips; each fluttering eye was golden; each searching hand was almost clawed at the nails. This wasn't what he'd actually seen. But his imagination was insistent. He needed something real to replace these images. He didn't want them. He didn't want her. The gilded, freckled South Court prince at the head of the circle held up his hands. "I'm sure more friends will come to join us, but in the meantime, let's begin. We'll all sing this as we go round:
Often given, sometimes stolen, rarely sold and never lent;
To give breath or run it out
Traded but not spent.
I won't take away your fun of solving the riddle, but I'm sure you can guess the answer."
There were better ways to use his time. Gemini knew that. But he'd been biding it all his life. What else could he do, but wait, when the things he wanted most were so close and yet getting no closer? So he followed the circle. So he sang the chant.
