welcome to Midsummer
Welcome to the wilds of Faerie, where deception and intrigue wind through the courts of the fae. Revels overflow with excess, beauty, and betrayal, while the students of the Iris Academy learn to take their place in a world where nothing is ever as it seems. Now, as a blue moon rises, the reigning High Court prepares to make peace with the Undersea, but peace is not something that rises easily from the ashes. Beware wandering into a faerie circle, mortals, and never strike a bargain with the fae; they may not be able to lie, but they are always hiding something.
Midsummer is a character-driven, fae folklore, text-based RPG site, founded 3 September 2023 by admins SeaJem + M. Site Lore
The Faewild is comprised of four Cardinal Courts, plus the ruling High Court and the Undersea. The Seelie Courts, North and South, are slightly more traditional and straightforward (as much as the fae ever are), which their Unseelie counterparts to the East and West are duplicitous and wild.
Farthest south, beneath the waves, lies the Undersea, home to the pearl-encrusted Sunken City. The Undersea fae are a proud people—perhaps too much so, according to some of their counterparts on dry land. All of the Faewild is ruled by the High Court, whose power is personified in the High King and Queen. By wearing this crown, they take on the spirit of the Faewild; their hearts beat with the heart of the land. Beware, and choose your words carefully: the fae are a capricious and tricky people, as fickle as they are cunning, and their rulers are the most of all.

[attr="class","box1a"]How much freedom would Amaris have to give up in order to get the rest back? The last thing she wanted was to be a pawn under the hand of the High Queen. Then again, she was a citizen of Faerie. She was already that pawn. At least now she was moving somewhere. She turned her gaze critically towards the mortal queen, trying to source more information from her face. There was little to be found there; wide eyes but without innocence, a forced regal bearing, a scattering of freckles fainter and fewer than Amaris's own. Rounded ears, rounded bones, solidity. There was little there to fear, but less there to trust. "You want me to pretend I'm your lover?" Amaris asked, her voice rough and tone skeptical. She stepped closer, closing in on the queen's space. "But I can only tell truths," she said in a lower tone, eyes narrowing. "So how can I tell you how lovely you look tonight? Or how I can only imagine how you must taste?" Her voice grew gradually quieter as she spoke and drew nearer to the mortal woman. "I hope you don't expect sweet nothings from me. I'm not sweet, and I can't lie."[newclass=.box1a]margin:0px auto; width:300px; height:425px; background: transparent; overflow:auto; padding:8px;[/newclass] [newclass=.box1a::-webkit-scrollbar]width:5px;[/newclass] [newclass=.box1a::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb]background: #4d221a;[/newclass] |

To flowers left here by my mother
[break][break] Guinivere turned to her, half startled. Whatever she had expected, it wasn’t this. All pretense was gone. She blinked.
[break][break] “You’re not a knight,” she said, beginning to understand. When an aspiring queen's guard had brought a stranger before her, she had thought she was being introduced to a member of the court. Now, however, looking between the mortal foe that had vanished and this woman, she was reconsidering that conclusion.
[break][break] She slowed down, studying her more. She looked familiar. At first she had thought she had seen the knights training, but now with the undersea, and the mortal she fought, and Gemini speaking altogether too much like his father, she was beginning to remember.
[break][break] “You killed that delegate from the south court.” she said. She could not judge her, not too terribly. They had both been murderesses at that party, now one was a queen and the other hunted. Their stations were not so different.
[break][break] She did not know how to respond, right away, the woman’s flirtations coming too quickly on the heels of this realization. She knew she had to keep up the act. All eyes were on her.
[break][break] She scanned the scene to find Gemini, but he had vanished. She was partially anxious and partially relieved. He was the one person here who could tell that she was lying. He would see right through her.
[break][break] “Come with me,” she said, trying to hold her wits together. “There is someone else from the revel here. He was also trying to kill the High King.”
[break][break] She tilted her head. “And that’s what you were really doing at that revel, wasn’t it?” She didn’t even need to point out that she could lie, for she wasn’t. That was just a question.

[attr="class","box1a"] Amaris's expression hardened into something bordering on a sneer. So these were the hands that held all of Faerie. It hardly boded well for them. This was precisely why putting the fae under one ruler was a fool's errand. "No," she said, all the pretense dropping away for a moment. If she had an excuse to not keep up this farce she'd take it. "It took you long enough to sort that out—Your Majesty." She could be executed for insubordination, but at this point, to hell with it. Amaris was not going to grovel to save a life that was, at this point, cursed and hunted. "Why do you ask me like you don't know? Sounds like you were there. You saw it." Amaris herself had only the dimmest memories of the overwhelming adrenaline, the hunger so hollow it threatened to turn her inside out, the blood she'd awoken tasting. So there was a third competitor for the blood of the king. She wondered what reason this one would have. As much as she didn't want to get mixed up in the formalities and tangle of the court, Amaris couldn't pass up the chance to have both killthieves together in one spot. She left her lack of answer as a yes. "What do you want with him?"[newclass=.box1a]margin:0px auto; width:300px; height:425px; background: transparent; overflow:auto; padding:8px;[/newclass] [newclass=.box1a::-webkit-scrollbar]width:5px;[/newclass] [newclass=.box1a::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb]background: #4d221a;[/newclass] |

[break][break] “I am a queen,” Guinevere said, which was no answer at all and the most effective one she knew. “What does it matter what I want with him?”[break][break] It left her cruelty up to the imagination. It protected her from making threats she found unseemly. She could have him killed for breaking into this event. She could have his arm cut off for wounding her.[break][break] What would it change? Information was so much more useful. [break][break]
She just watched the woman, the way she shifted, the look in her eyes. This could all be an assassination attempt or some other scheme. But she talked and moved like someone who was unused to being perceived, someone who was unused to speaking to others at all. She acted like she was seeing sunlight for the first time. Someone like that was working on their own. [break][break] “This conversation is ‘long enough?’” she replied mildly. “I stand before an unrivaled master of deduction.”[break][break]
She could not quite hold back a smile here, which was probably improper of her. Who would scold a queen? She had dealt with many delegates, ambassadors, heirs, guards, advisors. It had been quite a while before she had spoken to another common fae. Was it wrong to be excited? Should she have taken to her role as queen faster?[break][break]
Absolute power was supposed to inspire greed, but all it did was feel like a skin that didn’t fit. Julius’ knife let her change herself from time to time, and yet no magic could change her into the person the fae looked up to. She could only do what she could. She could only do what she could bear.[break][break] “I do know.” She tried to remind herself who she was speaking to– not a common fae. A murderer. Then again, in faerie, those were common enough.
